Eva Luna

Isabel Allende’s novel is re-imagined for the stage by OBIE-winning playwright Caridad Svich. This play tells the coming-of-age story of a woman born into poverty who journeys the world to find her voice as a storyteller and a holder of history. As reality and imagination blur through music and dance, Eva Luna follows the character’s journey from youth to adulthood, introducing us to a cast of characters who change the course of Eva’s life.

Content transparency:

Eva Luna explores mature themes, including sexual content, suicide, death, violence, and government oppression and revolution. Recommended ages 16+.

 

The Gradient

 In this satire set in the not-so-distant future, a new facility promises to take men accused of sexual misconduct and rehabilitate them into responsible citizens. But inside the walls of The Gradient, the culture ruled by profit margins and corporate buzzwords muddles its high ideals. New employee Tess is eager to do her part, but finds herself locked in a subtle psychological battle with her latest client - one who has the perfect answer to her every question. The Gradient asks: can we mass-produce forgiveness?

Content transparency: The Gradient includes frank discussions of sexual acts and brief descriptions of sexual harassment and violence. Characters occasionally use harsh, violent, or misogynist language. Recommended ages 16+.

 
Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea

 This playful, quirky, loose adaptation of The Little Mermaid, about a Little Rain Cloud who falls in love with a human, explores the struggles of unrequited love. Meanwhile, a queer writer, Dolan (modeled on Hans Christian Anderson) reveals his personal struggles with relationships in this story about love and passion. 

Content transparency: Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea includes profanity, verbal mentions of violence (stabbing and shooting) and death.

 

New Works Festival

7:30 p.m. April 10-12, 17-19

The New Works Festival features two original plays by ASU graduate students Dane Futrell and Claire Dettloff: 

Soul Magnet Beneath the Limestone: Crow is the new barback at the ominous Limestone Speakeasy, a storied bar that keeps alcoholics of all kinds coming back and buried deep beneath. While earnest and vulnerable, Crow remains open to manipulative "lessons" from former employee Leek, who drunkenly boasts his formidable tolerance while relentlessly downing shots of Jack Daniels. Leek and Crow fantasize about nightmares, filtered water, and the tantalizing bar manager, Tess, until she brings her new boyfriend Josh to the Limestone to meet her unique work family. As tensions rise, the jagged consequences of drunken manipulation erupt in various forms.

Content transparency: Soul Magnet Beneath the Limestone includes depictions of violence, adult language and alcoholism.

over my dead body there’ll be a pillow fight (the sleepover play): When Janelle invites four of her friends over for a classic high school sleepover, their bonds are tested by a traumatic confession and a never-ending itinerary of activities. Literally overnight, five high school juniors have to navigate the space between girlhood and womanhood, discovering just how deep their friendship is. over my dead body there'll be a pillow fight is a celebration of platonic love, girlhood rituals, and the unbreakable bonds that form between women and their friends. 

Content transparency: over my dead body there'll be a pillow fight explores mature themes including verbal mentions and conversations about sexual assault.
