MEASURE TO MEASURE - Southwest Shakespeare Company - August 6-9, 2026

By William Shakespeare, Directed by Keith Hall

Back by popular demand, Shakespeare’s MEASURE FOR MEASURE at Theatre Artists Studio.

One of Shakespeare’s morally complex "problem plays," Measure for Measure is set in a corrupt Vienna. When the Duke goes undercover to observe his city, his strict deputy, Angelo, sentences a young nobleman to death for premarital sex. To save her brother, the virtuous novice nun Isabella pleads for mercy, only for Angelo to hypocritically demand her virginity in exchange. Assisted by the disguised Duke, a web of trickery and mistaken identity unfolds to expose corruption and test the balance of justice. Rich with a cast of eccentric, comedic characters, the play masterfully blends dark drama with sidesplitting wit.

MEASURE FOR MEASURE - Southwest Shakespeare Company - May 15-24 and August 7-9, 2026

RARELY STAGED - DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO SEE IT!

MEASURE FOR MEASURE
MAY 15 - 24, STAGEBRUSH THEATRE

AUGUST 7 - 9, THEATRE ARTISTS STUDIO

by William Shakespeare

directed by Keath Hall

First performed in 1604, Measure for Measure jumps off the page as if it had been written today. It asks us questions about sin and virtue, justice vs mercy. Outlandish and funny, the play creates humor and darkness from ironic and tense situations.

No matter the time period or costuming, these characters live and breath in the only way that Shakespeare can write them

Measure For Measure is one of Shakespeare’s “problem plays.” A problem play is not easily classified as a comedy, tragedy or history, having a mix of tone and moral ambiguity. Set in corrupt Vienna, Measure for Measure unfolds when the Duke leaves a strict deputy, Angelo, to enforce restrictive laws while the Duke disguises himself to observe the events as they unfold. A nobleman, Claudio, is sentenced to execution for engaging in premarital sex with his fiance. Claudio’s virtuous sister Isabella, who is studying to become a nun, must then bargain with Angelo. Angelo demands her virginity for her brother's life, but the disguised Duke orchestrates a complex plan involving mistaken identity and trickery to expose Angelo's hypocrisy, ultimately testing mercy, justice, and balance in the community. Along the way we are introduced to a slew of funny and irascible characters sure to elicit sidesplitting fun.

Henry V by William Shakespeare--Whether framed as patriotic spectacle or anti-war critique Henry V forces audiences to confront enduring questions about power, identity, and the human cost of ambition—making it a vital, dynamic piece for today’s world. Young and eager to prove himself, Henry claims the French throne, which ultimately leads to him declaring war. Against all odds, and after an exhausting march across France, the outnumbered English army wins victory at the climactic Battle of Agincourt.  In the end, Henry seeks to unite the countries by marrying a French princess, achieving a hopeful final note. Southwest Shakespeare Company Announces 2025-26 Season!

SOUTHWEST SHAKESPEARE COMPANY ANNOUNCES 2025-26 SEASON

Southwest Shakespeare Company, the Phoenix area’s only classical theatre company, today announced its shows for the 2025-2026 season.  The varied and relevant season will explore themes of power, deception, fear and obsession--how they control us or are tools wielded to control others. All announced shows are being performed at Mesa Arts Center, Southwest Shakespeare’s home venue, although a few performances, a bonus show and other experiences may be offered at satellite locations (TBA). Tickets and Bard Card subscriptions will go on sale on Friday, May 9. Links to ticket sales and more details can be found at swshakespeare.org.

In exploring the season’s themes, Artistic Director Keath David Hall points to this quote from Shakespeare’s Henry V:

“I think the king is but a man, as I am: the violet smells to him as it doth to me: the element shows to him as it doth to me; all his senses have but human conditions: his ceremonies laid by, in his nakedness he appears but a man…”

Hall explains, “Power is laid bare this season as we see the veil ripped away on titles like King, Queen, Captain, Knight or Party Leader.  Come join us as we laugh, cry, live and suffer near those who have authority and position over others.”
