"Eugene O'Neill's powerful drama The Hairy Ape is a scathing portrait of the conflict among the classes and a searing depiction of the reality of how the working class can never rise to the top because they aren't in power. It centers around Yank, a macho coal stoker working on a transatlantic ocean liner who has a run-in with a rich socialite. With a passionate cast, Ronin Theatre Company's production is as raw, angry, rebellious and aggressive as Yank....director Skip Emerson has wisely chosen to use an ensemble of seven actors to play all of the parts. This gives a fantastic energy and raw feeling to the play as well as a connectivity between the classes in how the ensemble members morph between playing members of both the upper and working classes as well as a group of caged apes that Yank encounters at the zoo. Arizona Theatre Company brings Tony Award-winning Composers and Broadway Stars to Arizona for New Musical Workshop of My Man Godfrey
Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) has begun workshopping the first-ever musical adaptation of the 1930s classic novel My Man Godfrey. The new musical will feature a book by Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes and music & lyrics by Tony Award-winning composer Mark Hollmann, with Broadway Director and ATC’s Kasser Family Artistic Director Matt August at the helm of the workshop. The cast is headed by Broadway stars Kevin Earley and Stephanie Styles and is supported by more than two dozen of Arizona’s finest performers. The workshop marks the initial phase in bringing this beloved story to life.
“My Man Godfrey is a genuinely romantic love story set to a Golden-Age style score as interpreted through the hilarious lens that only Hollmann and Holmes possess,” August says. “It’s a story that occupies that special moment of American history when the Roaring 1920s and ‘30s collided with the Great Depression, causing a complete reframing of the ideas of wealth, poverty and the American Dream. This new musical comedy leans into those social distinctions with bright, loveable characters who all learn that privilege and purpose go hand in hand. And, oh my god! The music!! It’s astonishing!!”
My Man Godfrey is a new musical about a zany 1930s New York socialite who enlists a homeless man to be the family butler and then falls in love with him. All the while, his true identity has yet to be revealed. Considered one of the best Screwball Comedies of all time, this musical adaptation follows one of Manhattan’s craziest society families through a comedic romp as they learn the true value of their money and themselves.
The journey to adapt My Man Godfrey into a musical began in the early 2000s, with a collaboration between Holmes, who is known for his Tony Award-winning musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood and hits like “Escape (The Pina Colada Song),” and Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist Hollmann, renowned for his score for Urinetown. With their combined expertise, Holmes and Hollmann built upon the foundation of Eric S. Hatch’s novel My Man Godfrey to create a new musical adaptation.
August, My Man Godfrey’s original director, has been a driving force behind the project since its inception. After a stalled production at Los Angeles’s 2,000-seat Ahmanson Theatre, August brought the project to ATC. Now as the Artistic Director in charge of programing ATC’s seasons, August is intending to use this workshop to launch the world premiere of My Man Godfrey into a full production for Arizona audiences.
The addition of actors Earley and Styles to head the cast adds to the star-studded team being built for this production. Earley has appeared on Broadway in two separate runs of Les Miserables, Thoroughly Modern Millie and A Tale of Two Cities. Styles made her Broadway debut in the 2019 production of Kiss Me Kate and has gone on to star in television series such as Loot with Maya Rudolph and Curb Your Enthusiasm with Larry David. Arizona musical theatre veterans Toby Yatso, Katie McFadzen, D. Scott Withers, Seth Tucker, Brenda Jean Foley, Rusty Ferracane, Trisha Ditsworth, Matravius Avent, Lucas Coatney-Murrieta, Amy Jo Halliday, Debby Rosenthal, John Knispel, Wesley Bradstreet, Cassie Chilton and Alexandria Joy along with a team of musical theatre interns from ASU join the main company.

Auditions for CASH ON DELIVERY at Hale Centre Theatre announced for July 27
Hale Centre Theatre will hold auditions for Cash on Delivery on Saturday, July 27th, playing December 31st, 2024 - February 8th, 2025. The show is directed by Tim Dietlein. Performances are Wednesday through Saturday evenings with select matinee performances. Call backs for Cash on Delivery will be held Saturday, August 3rd with the first read through scheduled for Monday, November 11th, 2024 at 7:00 PM.

Synopsis
This fast paced British farce concerns a con artist who has duped the welfare authorities for years by claiming every type of benefit for the innumerable people he claims live at his address. He's sent scrambling when welfare investigators show up and he is forced to prove all of his boarders are in fact real. A hilarious comedy full of mistaken identities, slamming doors, and a con that spirals out of control.

"Focusing on interesting historical characters and featuring a gorgeous score, the musical Mack and Mabel is a humorous and heartfelt homage to the golden age of silent film. Fountain Hills Theater is presenting a fairly solid production of this rarely produced show that captures the magic and tragedy of early Hollywood... While (Jerry) while Herman's score is fantastic and the book weaves a poignant story of love, ambition, and the fleeting nature of fame, the characters aren't entirely likable and the book never truly shows why Mabel is drawn to Mack or why he constantly pushes her away...Fortunately, Herman's score is a joy, with many superb songs, and it's great to see Fountain Hills presenting this rarely produced show and to hear those lovely songs ...Mack and Mabel honors the legacy of early Hollywood while telling a poignant story of love, ambition, and the price of fame. NUNSENSE begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.”
Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns,tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show, written by Dan Goggin, has become an international phenomenon.

DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS - Zao Theatre - March 7-29, 2025
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, based on the popular 1988 MGM film, takes us to the French Riviera for high jinks and hilarity. Sophisticated, suave with a good dash of mischief, this hysterical comedy features a delightfully jazzy score by David Yazbek (The Full Monty) and was nominated for a staggering eleven Tony Awards.
Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together, only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress, Christine Colgate, wins, and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!

Two valley high school students will be headed to New York to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards – known as the Jimmy Awards.
Last night ASU Gammage celebrated it’s 10th anniversary of holding the annual ASU Gammage High School Musical Theatre Awards. Many winners – in many categories; costumes, lighting, vocals, hair/makeup, etc.
The male and female lead winners get to compete with hundreds of other students in the national event.

"With a never-ending stream of musical stage adaptations of hit films, it's a bit of a shock that the 1992 Disney film Newsies, which was a huge flop at movie theatres, not only went on to be a crowd-pleasing, Tony-winning show, but also one that continues to receive numerous productions across the country. Hale Centre Theatre presented the show in 2019 and has brought it back again in a production that features fantastic leads and a rousing ensemble, including a few members who played the same parts in the previous production. Newsies is full of showstopping dance numbers, toe-tapping tunes, memorable characters, and a whole lot of joy, so it's easy to see why Hale has brought the musical back so soon....Reece Harris leads the cast as Jack Kelly, delivering a performance filled with street smarts, charm and strength.... Arizona Theatre Matters (ATM), a pioneering force in radically inclusive theater, today announced the launch of its comprehensive 5-year strategic plan. This ambitious roadmap outlines ATM's vision to become a global leader in the field, fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion through innovative stage-to-film productions, accessible programming, and international collaborations.
"We are thrilled to share our strategic plan with the world," said Jeanmarie Simpson, Founding Artistic Director of ATM. "This plan represents a bold vision for the future of ATM, and we are confident that it will guide us towards achieving our ambitious goals of expanding our reach, amplifying diverse voices, and making a lasting impact on the global theater landscape."
The strategic plan outlines five key priorities for ATM over the next five years:
