A Stage of Mind Holiday Tradition Begins

 

Join us as we bring the beloved classic Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas to life on stage. This heartwarming story follows Emmet and Ma Otter as they each set out to give the other the perfect Christmas, only to discover that the things that matter most can't be bought.

Filled with music, laughter, friendship, and holiday spirit, this all-ages production welcomes performers of all experience levels and will feature singing, acting, puppetry, and plenty of opportunities to be part of something truly special.

For generations, this story has reminded audiences that family, friendship, and community are life's greatest gifts. We are honored to be among the first organizations granted licensing rights to produce this newly released adaptation and proud to introduce Arizona audiences to what we hope will become a cherished annual tradition.

After all, all we needed was each otter.

Join Stage of Mind Performing Arts this fall for Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas: The Musical! Based on the beloved Jim Henson holiday special, this all-ages production will bring the story to life through music, storytelling, and a heavy focus on puppetry. Students will have the chance to explore both acting and puppeteering as they work together to create a truly one-of-a-kind theatrical experience full of heart, creativity, and holiday spirit.

All ages community theater...everyone who enrolls will be able to be a part of the show. Rehearsals are at Crossroads Nazarene Church @ 2950 W Ray Road, Chandler AZ 85224 and the performances are at Desert Cross Lutheran Church (8600 S  McClintock Drive, Tempe AZ 852840

Rehearsals are once per week on Tuesdays starting on July 28th. At that rehearsal we go over all the characters and essentially learn and practice what we are looking for with each character. Then the next week, casting/auditions will take place (August 4th).

 

Tech rehearsals are Dec 16th and 17th and then performances are Dec 18, 19, and 20.

"Cody Dull's new play, Truce, which is having its premiere at Stage Left Productions, is a heartfelt and honest exploration of family, forgiveness, and the fragile threads that hold people together. While there are a few shortcomings in the script and this production, with a story that balances humor with emotional truth, Truce taps into something universal–our longing for connection and the need to make amends, especially in the face of impending loss–and does so with grace and authenticity....The play moves between raw confrontations and quiet moments of reflection as the characters grapple with their pasts and try to reshape their relationships. However, with seven characters, all of whom have secrets to reveal, and almost all of whom have loud emotional outbursts and confrontations, it is a bit long and gets a bit heavy handed at times, bordering on melodrama. Fortunately, what makes Truce overcome most of these issues is how it resists the urge to offer neat resolutions...While I had a few quibbles with the play and this production, playwright Cody Dull has much to be proud of in his original piece that is a moving and honest look at family and forgiveness."   - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)

The mood is somber, despite the festivities, because a number of evils poison the gaiety: greed, sins of the past and desperate, clawing hopes for the future spar with one another as the knowledge that Big Daddy is dying slowly makes the rounds.

Then it gets an off-Broadway production! Then (drumroll if you've got a drum) it's announced that their musical is going to Broadway (hooray!)! The New York Times called [title of show] 'DELECTABLE ENTERTAINMENT! A postmodern homage to the grand tradition of backstage musicals like Kiss Me, Kate and A Chorus Line.'
