Review Highlights: THE CANTEBURY TAROT - B3 Theater

"B3 Theater is one of just a handful of theatre companies in town that continually produce new works, including ones by local playwrights. Their latest offering is The Canterbury Tarot by Ashley Naftule, (which) mixes familiar characters from tarot cards with the main plot of Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tale" for a well-written and always interesting though somewhat muddy drama....even though the script could be clearer, the cast all deliver spirited, passionate, and determined portrayals under the sharp direction of Ilana Lydia and Carlin Thomas. There isn't a weak link in the cast...need just a small bit of tightening and added clarity in order for it to completely work, but as it is, it is still an intriguing and interesting play with varied and fleshed-out characters and stories and situations that hold your attention."  - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)

Amber Ryan named Stage Left Productions Youth Artistic Director

Amber Ryan named Stage Left Productions Youth Artistic Director

Amber became the Youth Education Director in 2018. Her main responsibilities have been directing youth shows. In 2019 she started the SLP homeschool program that started with a handful of kids and now has almost close to 100 participants. She has an excellent vision when it comes to directing the youth, whether it be in fairy tales or dramas. Recently her production of "The Revolutionists" won an overall youth production at the 2022 ariZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence. Amber has continued to educate youth and teens in a variety of plays, including just recently producing a very beautiful and simple production  of "26 Pebbles", proving that you do not need an extravagant set to tell a story. Stage left is excited to see what Amber has in store for the future. Congratulations Amber Ryan!

Rachel Cummings named Stage Left Productions Youth Education Director

Rachel Cummings has always had a passion for the fine arts. Her love originated onstage after being in a production of Annie. That love never ceased and she has appeared in many productions over the years. Rachel earned her B.A. in Theatre from Grand Canyon University and then continued to Liberty University where she received her M.A. in Strategic Communication. Rachel began directing at Stage Left Productions in 2018 when she co-directed James and the Giant Peach with SLP Artistic Director Cody Dull. And thus, her love for youth theatre was born! Rachel’s continued work with Stage Left includes Charlotte’s Web and Alice in Wonderland, which earned several AriZoni nominations – including Best Director. Last year Rachel tackled her biggest challenge yet, when she both directed and starred in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Nothing brings Rachel greater joy than seeing kids have fun while gaining self-confidence and nurturing a love for theatre! Congratulations Rachel Cummings!

About the Show
On the eve of her birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness—or genius—will she inherit? Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Best Play.

Cast of Characters:
Catherine
The daughter of a recently deceased, esteemed mathematician. She is gifted in her own right but fears she will inherit the same mental illness that plagued her father in his final days. She has a sharp and biting wit that she does not hesitate to launch at those around her when they have upset her. Her intense defensiveness springs from a crippling fear of failure and decline. Age 25

Claire
Catherine's practical and unimaginative sister. Claire lives in New York City and has a successful career, having gotten away from her family and her youth. Her care for her sister and her desire to help Catherine is blunt and often intrusive.. Claire is the closest thing the play has to an antagonist, even though she is acting from a pure-hearted and well-intentioned place. She just wants to help her sister get better, even if her methods are aggressive and unwanted. Late 20s. early 30s

Hal
A former, devoted student of Robert’s who wishes to search through his mentor’s work despite a budding romantic relationship with Catherine. Hal is lovable, nerdy, but a little sexist in his preconceptions and his perception of Catherine. He plays in a geeky band with other mathematicians. Late 20s-early 30’s

Robert
Robert is Catherine and Claire's father. A brilliant mathematician, he completely changed the field by his mid-twenties. In his later years, his mental health took a turn for the worse, as he became more and more prone to delusion. He is a tragic figure in the play, but he was also a brilliant force and a beloved father. Of all the people in Catherine's life, he is the one who believed in her the most.

Auditions Open to All

Synopsis
Based on Sholom Aleichem’s Tevye and his Daughters, Fiddler on the Roof is the beloved story of the small, tradition-steeped town of Anatevka, Russia, where Jews and Russians live in delicate balance. During the course of the show, the time honored traditions of Anatevka are both embraced and challenged by Tevye and his colorful community, as they witness his daughters, Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava, grow up and fall in love in a time of extraordinary change. Fiddler on the Roof’s Broadway premier became the longest-running Broadway musical in history, a title it maintained for almost 10 years. It is a story that captures the essential human longings for love, community, success, freedom, family, and meaning. Fiddler features such iconic songs as the beautiful “Sunrise, Sunset,” the boisterous “If I Were a Rich Man”, and the classic “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.”
