"Based on the 1988 John Waters movie of the same name, Hairspray is an infectious and hilarious musical comedy that is celebrating its 20th anniversary of opening on Broadway with a national tour that's using the direction, choreography, and creative elements from the original Tony-winning Best Musical's Broadway production. With a perfect cast that get big laughs, and excellent direction and creative aspects, the national tour is an upbeat production of this funny and crowd-pleasing musical, playing its final week after two years on the road this week at ASU Gammage.... With excellent comic timing and a singing voice that soars, Niki Metcalf is a knock-out as Tracy. Her exuberant portrayal easily makes the audience fall in love with Tracy and root for her to succeed. Andrew Levitt is exceptional as Tracy's mother Edna. The film and all other productions of the show I've seen have always used a man to play the part of Tracy's mother Edna, but not always someone who is known to the drag community. Levitt has appeared as his drag persona Nina West for over 20 years and even competed on season 11 of "RuPaul's Drag Race." Levitt has sharp comic timing that gets big laughs, a lovely singing voice, and an abundance of power and warmth in his portrayal..." - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)
