THE PLAYGROUND - Space 55 - September 30-October 29, 2019
The Playground is a month-long, multi-discipline performing arts intensive which culminates in a weekend of performances. A dozen top-notch teaching artists have been enlisted to offer 10 hands-on, material-developing workshops that explore the intersection of performance and writing; playwriting, storytelling, improvisation, movement, songwriting, comedy and lots more. Participants at all experience levels are encouraged to deep dive into the whole mind-boggling festival (more than 30 hours of workshops), but are welcome to dip their toe in one workshop at a time.
Workshops run Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6:30-9:30 Sept. 30 to Oct. 29.
Performances November 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

FADE - Space 55 - April -26, 2020

When Lucia, a Mexican-born novelist, gets her first TV writing job, she feels a bit out of place on the white male-dominated set. Lucia quickly becomes friends with the only other Latino around, a janitor named Abel. As Abel shares his stories with Lucia, similar plots begin to find their way into the TV scripts that Lucia writes. Fade is a play about class and race within the Latinx community, as well as at large, and how status does not change who you are at your core.

But when her equipment begins picking up ominous transmissions from beyond the stars, she starts to worry that she’s turning into one of her callers.

The Playground at the Fairground

Every Monday & Tuesday in the month of October, Space55 will be presenting a pop-up academy for the performing arts. Classes on playwriting, storytelling, improv, and other disciplines will be presented by a team of instructors (under the guidance of director/writer extraordinaire Kim Porter). Students who go through the month of classes will have a chance to perform their works in development during showcase shows at the Space in early November.
