ABOUT THE SHOW:

After Ferguson, the ghosts of Michael Brown
UNTIL THE FLOOD is a gripping and revelatory new play constructed and informed by interviews playwright Dael Orlandersmith conducted with a cross-section of people in and around Ferguson. All of whom have vastly different perspectives on the incident that turned the town into a flashpoint in America’s never-ending struggle for racial justice. As it examines the community fallout after the fatal officer-involved shooting of Michael Brown, UNTIL THE FLOOD hunts for deeper societal truths - giving voice to a community haunted by injustice and a country desperately yearning for change.

“…so palpably compassionate, it achieves a great beauty by bringing us together rather than driving us apart.” - The Chicago Tribune

FOOTLOOSE - Actor's Youth Theatre - January 25-February 10, 2024

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. But he’s not prepared for the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, who is determined to exercise control over the town’s youth. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges pins a father longing for the son he lost against a young man aching for the father who walked out on him.

Hilarity, failed dishes, and food fights ensue during this live “broadcast” of a public access cable cooking show hosted by two larger-than-life Italian sisters, Delphine and Carmela Calamari. The sisters sing and dance to such beloved Italian favorites as “Volare,” “Come On A My House,” “Botcha Me,” “Que Sera Sera,” “That’s Amore,” and of course, “Mambo Italiano!” as they try to make it through their final broadcast together in one piece.

You will laugh from start to finish as their singing, dancing, cooking and ad lib banter with guests on stage makes this a must see!

THE WOMAN IN BLACK - Herberger Theater Center - February 8-February 25, 2024

Written by Susan Hill
Adapted by Stephen Mallatrat

Center Stage

THE ACCLAIMED GHOST STORY COMES DRAMATICALLY ALIVE IN MALLATRATT’S INGENIOUS STAGE ADAPTATION.

Direct from the United Kingdom, with a cast from the West End of London, comes the second longest-running play in the history of British Theatre. Stephen Mallatratt adapts Susan Hill’s 1983 novel into a bone-chilling drama capturing its essence with masterful precision.

Obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black, Arthur Kipps engages a skeptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. See it if you dare!

Review Highlights: SCROOGE, THE MUSICAL - Arizona Theatre Company

Shuler Hensley and Cast

highlights from local critics reviews - (click link at bottom of each review to read complete review)

Click here for more information on this production that runs through December 30

"offers a familiar journey through the well-trodden narrative of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." ...while the essence of the classic tale remains intact in this updated stage adaptation, Bricusse's score isn't that memorable. While this production keeps the period, setting, and main characters from Dickens' novel, it also makes a few weird changes to the names of the characters (some of which were also in the film) along with incorporating some strange creative elements that distract from the emotional connection that one would hope for from Dickens' story."  - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)

"Director Matt August has staged “Scrooge” with merriment, gusto, and shimmering spirit as a large cast sing well, dance jubilantly, and become the town’s residents with passionate honesty.  August’s swirlingly fluid direction is aided by choreographer Spencer Liff’s period dances and further enhanced by Jason Ardizzone-West’s storybook theater design which sets the show in a period theater that greets the audience upon arrival and is then brought to life."   -Chris Curcio, Curtain Up Phoenix (click here to read the complete review)

"Those already familiar with the work as a live show may find themselves having to uncomfortably adjust to director Matt August’s new vision of the Bricusse musical....What is genuinely odd, however, is how the exchange of dialog between Scrooge and the phantoms is handled.  For the most part, the ghosts remain motionless upstage while Scrooge looks directly out across the audience, never physically facing them. We see what he clearly sees, but instead, they're behind him....The strength in the Bricusse telling of the Dickens classic is mostly in the finale sequence where Scrooge's redemption is fully realized."
