" In the 1997 animated feature Anastasia, members of the title character's family are murdered during the Russian Revolution in 1918. Death is a heavy subject for an animated movie aimed at families but for the stage musical of Anastasia, which is geared toward an older audience, the serious subject matter works quite well to frame this story of a young woman who suffers from amnesia and takes a journey to discover her past that also gives her hope for the future. The non-Equity national tour is to town for five performances with a talented cast and impressive creative elements...Veronica Stern delivers a touching, layered performance of Anya, a young woman who is strong enough to take care of herself but is also vulnerable, stubborn, and confused due to not knowing who she is or much about her past. ...Willem Butler and Bryan Seastrom make a winning duo as the lovable con men Dmitry and Vlad. ...Anastasia may have a few unnecessary moments and songs that slow the thrust of the main plot down slightly, but it also has gorgeous creative elements that provide depth, visual pops and a cinematic sweep to the plot. The touring cast embody and bring their characters vibrantly to life, and when combined with the impressive creative aspects and clean direction it results in a crowd pleasing musical that shines a light on this historical rumor and the legend of just what happened to the Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia.

The musical Anastasia, which is based on the 1997 animated film of the same name, has a plot that centers on the factual tragedy of a family that was murdered during the Russian Revolution in 1918.

 

While that might seem heavy material for an animated family film or a big budget musical comedy, the plot has an intriguing and hopeful story about how a young woman’s journey to the past helps her find her own future. It also has a rich score that’s a good mix of drama and comedy, including the Oscar nominated song "Journey to the Past." 

The musical had a healthy Broadway run of almost two years, and the National Tour comes to town this week for five performances at the Orpheum Theatre from May 5-7

Starring as Anya, the main character who is a young woman who has no memory of her past, is Veronica Stern, a recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, who is making her national tour debut in this production.

Stern sat down in between tour stops to answer some questions about the show, what it's like playing a character based on a historical person, what life on the road is like, and why she belives a story set in 20th century Russia is still relevant today

For someone who isn’t aware of Anastasia, what would you tell them it’s about?

"Anastasia is the story of a young woman, Anya, who is on a journey to figure out who she really is. She has a gut feeling that there is more beyond her life as a street sweeper, but she needs help to leave Russia. She falls in line with conmen, Dmitry and Vlad who tell her that they can get her to Paris. They go on a fun adventure to making Anya into 'The Princess Anastasia' and she goes on her own journey of deciding if this is really who she is as well."

This musical is based on historical characters as well as the beloved 1997 animated film. How familiar with the piece were you before you auditioned for the tour?

"I didn’t grow up watching Anastasia. In fact, it wasn’t until the Broadway musical came out that I became really aware of it. I went to CCM (University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music), alma mater of composer, Stephen Flaherty and the original Broadway Anya, Christy Altomare. I recall that the year that I was applying to CCM, they held a special concert where Christy returned to the ccm stage to sing Journey to the Past and that’s how I knew I had to go to this school. From there, I did more research on the show, and of course started singing the songs. Once I got the job for tour, I was given a very extensive historical packet to learn more. "

What can you tell us about your character, Anya and what do you most and least identify with her?

"Anya is a strong woman. She is brave and curious. I personally identify with her curiosity for life."

Since the musical is based on an actual character, Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, what kind of research did you do to prepare for the role?

"Several weeks before I joined the tour, I was sent my script, musical, and about 70 pages of background research on the Romanov’s and that time period."

You got your BFA in Musical Theatre at the prestigious University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. What were some of your favorite shows and courses at CCM? 

"Unfortunately, half of my time at school wins shadowed by the pandemic, but we still tried to make the most of it. One of my favorite projects that I worked on while at school was the inaugural showcase for BIPOC students. It’s a project that took almost 2 years to come to fruition, I am most proud to have left that legacy and see that they still carry it out annually."

You're making your national tour debut with this show. How have you found that life has been on the road and performing in different cities week to week?

"Touring is really hard! I won’t sugar coat it. I’ve learned a lot about performing while traveling, and I will always be grateful for this experience."

What is your favorite moment in the show and why is it your favorite?

"My favorite moment changes every day. As we approach the end of tour, I find myself getting sentimental more often. "

Anastasia is set in the early part of the 20th century in Russia. Why do you think this show is relevant today?

"Anastasia is relevant today because at its core, it is a story about home, love and family which is a timeless sentiment."

What do you hope audiences will take away from seeing Anastasia at the Orpheum Theatre?

"I hope that audiences leave the theater a little happier than they came in. Theater is meant to be an experience that makes you feel good. I hope they leave with smiles on their faces and music in their hearts."

Talking to two cast members of MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL, which plays the Orpheum Theatre March 3-5

You have to hand it to Jeanie Linders.  Her show Menopause, the Musical struck a chord when it first premiered in 2001 and has gone on to have countless productions across the globe ever. Linders’ simple lyrics adorn popular songs from the 1960s to the 1980s and the show is a fun, joyful experience.  And the overall message of the musical of empowerment and owning up to what life deals you is something both women and men can relate to. 

Linders’ premise for the show is very simple – four women meet when fighting over sale bras in the lingerie department of Bloomingdale’s, discover they have a lot in common, and bond over a day of shopping throughout the store.  Over the course of the 90 minute musical, the ladies talk and sing about the many changes they are experiencing once they’ve hit the menopausal years – from night sweats to weight gain, lack of sex drive to hot flashes. Linders’ idea to use popular songs with rewritten lyrics is a good one, since familiarity of the music turns them into toe tappers.  She turns "Chain of Fools" into "Change of Life," “Heat Wave” into “Hot Flash,” "Stayin' Alive" becomes "Stayin' Awake" and "Night Fever" is now "Night Sweatin'."  

With topics that anyone can identify with, whether you’ve been through menopause or not, like memory loss, restlessness and mood swings, Menopause, the Musical manages to be a show for just about everyone.  

The tour of the show comes to the Orpheum Theatre for five performances this weekend and two of the ladies in the cast sat down to answer some question about the show

How long have you been with Menopause The Musical?

What do you think makes Menopause The Musical one of the most successful touring off-Broadway shows in history?

  

Many women can relate to what all women have to go through in their life. It becomes a sisterhood. When women come to see our show, they come in as strangers, but after the show they leave as friends.  It’s truly exciting to see.  

 

What is your favorite number to perform in Menopause The Musical and why?  

There are many many moments. Here are two of my favorites…. “My Guy” (Temptations) to My Thighs -Menopause The Musical … “Heat Wave” (Peggy Lee) to Hot Flash-Menopause The Musical. Come out to see the show. There are so many…. all women can relate where they can pick their favorites. However, there is a song close to the end of the show I cannot tell you about… that will make the audience react with excitement!!!!!! Come see the show and find out!!!!!

 

What can audiences expect to take away from this show?  

A sense of “Empowerment “ for women …to embrace what is going on in their life creating a sisterhood which cannot be broken for all women who will all go through the CHANGE and come out on the other side Enlighten as a Sisterhood.

How long have you been with Menopause The Musical?  

"I’ve been with the show for 21 years. I joined the Off-Broadway cast in April of 2002 as the Dance Captain and U/S of Soap Star, Iowa Housewife & Earth Mother.  I did take an 11-year break in 2008 when I got pregnant with my twins, returning to Menopause in 2019."

 

What do you think makes Menopause The Musical one of the most successful touring off-Broadway shows in history?

"Heart This show is filled with Love, empathy for ourselves and others and a joy at realizing we are all on this journey together. It’s such a clever, fun way of looking at real-life situations we all experience through a comic and touching lens. "

 

What is your favorite number to perform in Menopause The Musical and why?  

When I’m playing the Iowa Housewife- Only You. It is Iowa’s finale to her journey through the show with the help of her newfound friends. It’s a song with pure fun and Joy.  As Soap Star - it’s a tie. I’m Having A Hot Flash Reprise & Please Make Me Over. Soap realizes it is Ok to age & that she is still sexy and has a lot to offer.  As Earth Mother - Puff My God I’m Dragging!  Earth has fun realizing she can’t keep up with what the young ones are doing with exercise…but she’s Ok & is still on the game! She does it her way!!

 

What can audiences expect to take away from this show?  

"Audiences will laugh & perhaps even tear up at some of the hilarious & poignant moments we explore as we talk about ourselves, our lives, and our families. They will take away a Pride in the Sisterhood we all share and they will feel better about themselves and their lives. And hopes as they encounter their lives in the future - they can chuckle and relax about all of life’s inevitable challenges and changes. It is a privilege to age with grace and humor! "

"the national tour of Fiddler on the Roof, which is at the Orpheum Theatre this weekend and is based on its recent Broadway revival, is a soaring success....The non-Equity tour cast is wonderful, with all delivering strong performances that are realistic. Jonathan Hashmonay is warm and grounded as Tevye, with an exceptional singing voice that brings nuance and emotional depth to each lyric he sings. Tevye is the rock of the show, and it would seem of Anatevka, and Hashmonay has a beautiful and natural connection with all of his fellow cast mates. ...As Tevye's wife Golde, Maite Uzal, who has been with this tour for a few years, is equally as good as Hashmonay. Golde is a strong woman but also a wife and mother who is overworked and constantly complains... Like Hashmonay, Uzal is delivering a rich performance of this classic character....While Fiddler on the Roof may tell the story of the Jewish residents from a small village in Russia at the turn of the 20th century, it is a universal story that practically anyone can relate to, no matter what religion you are. With dozens of regional productions annually, numerous Broadway revivals, a well regarded film adaptation, and having been translated for many international versions of the show, Fiddler on the Roof is, arguably, one of the most beloved and most frequently produced musicals of all time. 

Based on the tales by Sholem Aleichem and featuring a score with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick that includes such classic show tunes as "Sunrise, Sunset," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "If I Were a Rich Man." "Tradition," and "Do You Love Me?" Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevye, the poor Jewish milkman who has five daughters. The show is set in Russia in the early 1900s and focuses on how Tevye must face changing times as he deals with his strong-willed wife and daughters as well as the non-Jewish residents who also inhabit their small village of Anatevka.

The national tour of the show comes to the Orpheum Theatre, with peformances from December 2-4.

Jonathan Hashmonay who plays Tevye in this production sat down to answer some questions about the show, his character, and how growing up in Israel has informed his portrayal.

Fiddler on the Roof is a classic, beloved musical but for someone who isn’t aware of this show what would you tell them it’s about?

Jonathan Hashmonay: "To me this musical is about Family, Love, Tradition, and the modern world. All of these aspects amalgamate to form a masterpiece that is still relevant today. The constant struggle between modernization and tradition, and the exploration of how love can fit into a world that is unaware of its true meaning, makes for a timeless story."

What past experience have you had with the musical?

"Certain songs have been with me for as long as I can remember. I can’t even recall when was the first time I heard 'If I Were a Rich Man.' It has always been around. But my first experience with the musical in its true form was in college. We learned about it in History of Musical Theatre class and I immediately fell in love. Later that year my musical theatre program took a trip to NYC and we got to see this production on Broadway! I later saw it 3 more times and brought all of my friends and family to see it. It became my favorite show soon after." 

Tevye is one of the most well-known musical theatre characters. What aspects of the role do you identify with, and which did you least identify with?

"The thing I identify with the most has to be his love for his family. Everything he does, and all that brings him joy in his life are his daughters and his life at home. And I feel the same way about my family. Even though I don’t have kids, my immediate and extended family are all extremely close. And there is nothing in the world that I enjoy more than spending Sabbath dinner with all of us together. I think Tevye feels the same way. 

I don’t think there is an aspect of Tevye that I don’t identify with. As an actor, my job is to look at the character and find ways of understanding and justifying his reasonings and thoughts even if they are not my own. I’ve worked very hard to make sure that I can identify with every nook and cranny of his mind and his choices. If I had to pick one thing, it would be his relationship with Golde. He uses her belief system against her in the dream which ends up backfiring but he maybe should have realized earlier that it would."

You grew up in Israel and are a descendant of holocaust survivors. How did that experience and your family history help in your portrayal?

"That is actually a very difficult question. This show takes place in 1905, before the holocaust took place. My Judaism is highly influenced by the holaucust. I therefore spent countless hours researching and thinking about what it means to be Jewish before the holaucust. However, even with all this research, I wasn’t able to completely disassociate from it. It is part of who I am; it changes the way I look at people, and situations; it changes how I view conflict and struggle. And therefore by association bleeds into my portrayal of Tevye. 

I think about my home country a lot in this show. Especially during the wedding and in Act II. During the scene where the Constable orders the Jews out of Anatevka I think about leaving my home and all of the things I miss about it. My home is with me always on stage. "

Was there any type of research you did to prepare for the role?

"The production has many books and videos that we used as research. The original Shalom Aleichem stories, a book called 'Life is with People', that talks in great detail about life in the shtetl in the Pale of Settlement, and the documentary 'Miracles of Miracles' are just a small part of the research work that has gone into my preparation. I’ve also interviewed my grandparents, my parents, and any of their friends who had anything to do with the Pale of Settlement or had to go through similar experiences. The hardest part of it all is not having children. Trying to learn about the love and sacrifice that parents feel through other people’s accounts has been incredibly challenging and is an ongoing learning experience. "

What is your favorite moment in the show and why is it your favorite?

"My favorite moment in the show is the Horse Mule argument in the opening number. The intense disagreement that stems from such a seemingly simple event exemplifies on of the most fundamental Jewish traits in my opinion. Each side passionately defending their opinion with such fervor, or 'chutzpah' in Yiddish, and then immediately forgetting about the whole thing and going back to dancing together is the thing I love most about my heritage. I often notice it in my day to day life. I will have an extremely heated discussion with my friends or family and after 20 minutes of intense and seemingly bitter debate, we smile and go have lunch together as if nothing happened. I think that is one of the best ways to learn and grow and is directly related to my Judaism. "

Have you been in any previous productions of the show? If so, how does this production of the show differ from those?

"I’ve never actually been in any other production of Fiddler, so I don’t have any personal experience. However, based on my knowledge of the show I can say that most productions take a more presentational approach where as our production tries to keep everything rooted in reality as much as possible. "

You graduated from Penn State’s musical theatre program. What was your experience like there and what were some of your favorite classes or favorite parts you played there?

"I’ve always been a singer, but I’ve never acted until I got to Penn State in 2015. It was a life changing experience to learn a new art form from scratch at such a high caliber. Therefore, anything to do with the study of acting was my favorite. Of particular interest to me was Shakespeare. The deep analyzation of text and finding subtext between words that are no longer in use was illuminating. 

I think the transition into college life was particularly hard for me. I moved to college from Israel after spending three years as a singer in the IDF Ground Forces Band. My military service, while not as combative, still required a mentality that no one in my program could really understand. Additionally, I was older than everyone there (I started when I was 22). But my teachers and classmates accepted me and taught me how to fit in to this new industry and life. I am extremely grateful for them. "

Why do you think this show is still relevant today?

"There are aspects of this show that, as long as humanity survives, will be relevant. Traits such as love and the longing for similarity are part of being human and are always relevant no matter the time. However, this show is much more than that. Particularly with the war in Ukraine, and the refugee crisis that it created, a show that lets you see into what it feels like to be kicked out of your home is of particular relevance. Not to mention with the rise of anti-semitism world wide, this story becomes doubly important."

What do you hope audiences will take away from seeing Fiddler on the Roof at the Orpheum Theatre?

"Out of everything that this show is, most of all, I hope that audiences are able to see the power of listening to the other and adaptation and forgiveness. Many characters in this show go through different levels of change and every time they do, their lives become closer to what they want them to be. I think this is a beautiful take away and can be applied to many aspects of life. "

The American Theatre Guild, the largest not-for-profit touring Broadway presenter in the nation, unveils its highly anticipated 2022–2023 BROADWAY AT THE ORPHEUM SERIES. The Series will include the following touring productions: FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, R.E.S.P.E.C.T., BUDDY – THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY, and ANASTASIA.

Talking to JARED BYBEE who plays Emile de Becque in the national tour of SOUTH PACIFIC

The musicals of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein have produced not only some of the most recognizable songs from the musical theatre but also shows with stories that touch upon important social issues. Their musical South Pacific, which was based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize–winning 1947 book Tales of the South Pacific, features the hit songs "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger Than Springtime," "Happy Talk," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair," and "Bali Ha'i," and focuses on racial prejudice between US military personnel and the locals on a South Pacific island during World War II.

Jared Bybee has had numerous roles in the world of opera, including recently playing Escamillo in Carmen at Charleston Opera Theater, Don Giovanni at Seattle Opera, and The Pilot in The Little Prince at Utah Opera, and also sang with Arizona Opera in The Barber of Seville. He has also appeared in numerous TV shows and films.

For the national tour of South Pacific, Bybee takes on the classic role of Emile de Becque, which has been played by such famous opera stars a Ezio Pinza and Paulo Szot, and the national tour of the show plays the Orpheum Theatre for five performances this weekend, April 1-3.

In between stops on the tour, Bybee sat down to answer some questions about the show, the important social messages that Rodgers and Hammerstein tackle in it, as well as what it's like being back on the road after having so much time off due to COVID.

South Pacific is a classic musical, but for someone who has never heard of it, what would you tell them it's about?

Jared Bybee: "For someone who has never heard of South Pacific, I’d describe it to them as a story of love, loss, and redemption. Set during World War II, the musical tells the story of two couples and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of war and by their own prejudices. Many characters face loss of happiness due to prejudices, so it’s about overcoming their own biases for love."

What can you tell us about the character you play in the show, Emile de Becque?

"Emile de Becque is a strongly principled man. He left his home country due to injustice that he witnessed and stood against. He’s now found a second chance at creating a life for himself in the South Pacific, and at love after losing the mother of his children. "

What type of research did you do for the role?

"In preparation for this role, I read Mitchner’s Tales of the South Pacific, a Pulitzer Prize winning novel of which the musical is based on. I also watched the original film, as well as the West End production, in addition to working with my acting coach Jon Marans."

The role of Emile de Becque has been played by several famous opera singers in the past, and you have vast experience of appearing in operas, including in The Barber of Seville here in the state with Arizona Opera. How do you approach playing a character like de Becque as compared to once in the numerous operas you've appeared in?  

"What makes this role and experience different from past roles in opera that I’ve performed, for one, is having the ability to sing in my native language, which is a great luxury to be able to emote in. The role lends itself to an operatic vocalist, and having unsung dialogue allows me to delve deeper into the character in ways I’ve never done before. Also, rather than an opera or a musical, this story is better described as a play or a story with music to elevate and drive home the important messages throughout."

Rodgers and Hammerstein wisely incorporated social issues into most of their shows, including tackling the issue of racial prejudice in South Pacific - What can you tell us about how those issues are depicted in the show and why you feel they are still important to address today?

"The issues depicted in the show are best highlighted through the two romantic relationships in the show, which are that of Liat and Cable, and Emile and Nellie. The heart of the struggles and biases presented in the show are best summarized in Cable’s song “You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught. That song is truly the central message of the story. Also, the reality that not everyone gets a second chance is made prevalent throughout the show, so it’s important to choose love and acceptance the first time around. Our culture has become highly aware of racial issues and injustice, so the messages presented in this show have never been more relevant and important to bring to audiences."

What is your favorite moment in the show, and why is it your favorite?

"It is nearly impossible to choose a favorite moment in this show. I’m working with so many talented performers that create memorable moments constantly throughout the show, so having said that, I suppose the simplest answer is that any moment shared with a castmate is even more cherished than the last."

South Pacific is a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical with a vast number of well known songs. Do you have a favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein song and is there any particular reason why it’s your favorite?

"My favorite song of Rodgers and Hammerstein would have to be Billy Bigelow’s soliloquy from Carousel. That piece of music effortlessly highlights the masterful storytelling that has kept R&H’s compositions such a relevant and revered part of the culture."

What has it been like being on the road and touring the country with this show after so many live theatre and opera productions were shut down two years ago in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic?

"After the pandemic shut down live performances for nearly two years, being on a national tour performing every night is a most surreal experience. We, as performers, don’t take a single moment on stage for granted, and our audiences share our excitement for live performances after so much time away. Also, being able to travel to so many beautiful places throughout my home country that I’ve never visited before is an incredible experience."

What do you hope audiences will take away from seeing South Pacific at the Orpheum Theatre?

"I hope that audiences leave a performance of South Pacific truly recognizing just how far we have come as a society, and feeling inspired to stay diligent so that history doesn’t repeat itself."
