One of Shakespeare’s morally complex "problem plays," Measure for Measure is set in a corrupt Vienna. When the Duke goes undercover to observe his city, his strict deputy, Angelo, sentences a young nobleman to death for premarital sex. To save her brother, the virtuous novice nun Isabella pleads for mercy, only for Angelo to hypocritically demand her virginity in exchange. Assisted by the disguised Duke, a web of trickery and mistaken identity unfolds to expose corruption and test the balance of justice. Rich with a cast of eccentric, comedic characters, the play masterfully blends dark drama with sidesplitting wit.
