The Constant Teacher: Kyle Lawson and the Power of Theater
When: Thursday, Aug. 22, 2–5:30 p.m.
Where: Greasepaint Theater, 7020 E. Second St., Scottsdale.
What: Individuals needed for Candid interviews for documentary short (10-20 minutes) that will be submitted by Dec. 5 for the 2025 Phoenix Film Festival.
Abstract: Kyle Lawson called himself a reluctant theater critic, even after publishing uncounted thousands of reviews over his four-decade career in Arizona journalism. Although it wasn’t true that he “never saw a play he didn’t like,” as a rival newspaper once sniped, Kyle always was a cheerleader and
champion for live theater, turning actors into local celebrities and ultimately shaping the cultural identity of his city in a way few arts critics could imagine.
Interview Questions:
1. Tell us who are you, where you live, and how you fit into the theater world here in Arizona.
2. How did you know Kyle? How would you describe him, either as a person or as a writer, reporter and theater critic?
3. What is your most vivid memory of Kyle, or of something that he wrote?
4. How would you describe Kyle’s impact on theater and the arts in the Phoenix area?
5. Is there anything else you want to share?
Contact: Richard Powers Hardt (rghardt.arizoni@gmail.com) or Kerry Stewart Lengel (kerrylengel@gmail.com) if you're interested to speak about Kyle on camera and able to attend the interview session on August 22
