Three Nights Only – November 7-9, 2025 – Nelson Fine Arts Center, ASU
This fall, Ghosteater is stepping into new territory. Known for its bold, design-forward productions, the Phoenix-based theater ensemble is turning inward for its first-ever studio production — a completely actor-driven experiment in theatrical intimacy. The project: “Scenes from a Marriage” by the noted Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, in an English version by Emily Mann.
Performances will take place November 7, 8, and 9, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. in Studio 133 at the Nelson Fine Arts Center, on the campus of Arizona State University.
This adaptation of Bergman’s acclaimed 1974 film traces the evolution of a relationship across several decades, from youthful passion to middle-aged reckoning and beyond. The play – adapted by renowned playwright Mann – illuminates universal themes of love, identity, and vulnerability that remain as urgent today as when Bergman first explored them.
But Ghosteater’s approach to this material is unlike anything the company has done before. “We’ve been wanting to do an experiment — something totally stripped-down, just actors, text, and audience,” says director Matthew Watkins. “This script is the perfect one for that approach. It depicts people as they are, not how they want to be seen. It’s honest about all the ways we struggle and fall short, and in this studio production, we’ll be inviting audiences to experience that honesty up close.”
By removing design and technical elements, Ghosteater’s “Scenes from a Marriage” places performance at the center — an immediate encounter that exposes the raw emotional core of Bergman’s story.
The cast features Matthew Dieckman, Katrina Donaldson, Emily Mohney, Pamela Sterling, and Steve Wilcox. The creative team includes fight choreographer Rachelle Dart, intimacy director Matt Denney, production assistant Nico Pascua, and producer Joya Scott.
Bergman — one of the most influential filmmakers of the twentieth century — was known for his unflinching examinations of human relationships, faith, and identity. His work continues to inspire artists who seek emotional honesty and psychological depth on stage and screen alike.
Ghosteater’s “Scenes from a Marriage” promises to be a darkly funny, moving meditation on love and betrayal, performed in the most direct way possible.
