B3 Theater announces details for their Writing and Directing Workshops, a part of their 5TH FESTIVAL OF SHORTS, this Saturday, June 11th

The Sweet Art of Writing Short Plays

The right three-minute pop song can contain an entire universe, conveying as much emotion and possibility as an entire album. A short play is no different—a story well-told in 10 or 15 pages can leave just as deep an impression as a whole evening of theater. This workshop is all about learning tips and techniques on how to script a tight, self-contained narrative in a short span of time.

The Sweet Art of Writing Short Plays will cover:
  • Writing compelling dialogue
  • Establishing characters quickly
  • Scene-setting and pacing
  • World-building
  • Production considerations
  • And a few hands-on exercises for generating story ideas and characters
By the end of this workshop you should have the bones of a new short play to take home and flesh out.

And our Directing Shorts workshop is by B.J. Garrett:

DIRECTING TOGETHER: GETTING MORE THAN YOU WANT BY GIVING UP GROUND will help you get the most from your actors by meeting them where they are and taking the journey with them. In this brief workshop led by Space 55’s Artistic Director BJ Garrett, participants will learn some suggested best practices for every step of the directing process: preparation, casting, reading, blocking, rehearsing, and releasing the show into the wild after final dress. True to the topic of the course, BJ will meet workshop participants where THEY are by soliciting discussion around their personal roadblocks and helping work through them in real time using newly learned techniques.
