B3 Theater, Inc. Announces its 2022-23 Mainstage Season!
The Kissing Curse
by Kirt Shineman
September 2022
Starting off the season is Kirt Shineman's THE KISSING CURSE. Mr. Shineman is a local artist. It has Mrs. Evers' Boys vibes, mixed with an element of horror. A scientist in the 1940s decides to test the parasite found in the kissing bug on African American mental patients. The parasite slowly eats a person’s heart, brain, and other organs. This is the same malady that took Charles Darwin, and two main characters are nick-named after him. A three person show, the structure of the piece is parasitic, meaning that the scene will be going along, then all of a sudden, a different character’s perspective will wrest away the action. Very compelling, beautifully written, and speaks for social justice.
Gallathea
by John Lyly
December 2022
In December, be sure to catch the gender-bending John Lyly script, Gallethea! Gallathea is an Elizabethan stage play, a touching comedy by John Lyly. First produced in 1588, the play is set in the woods. It features a host of characters including Greek deities, nymphs, fairies, and shepherds. It is important because it has two female characters falling in love with one another, and unlike other plays of the time, they don’t have to give up that love at the end of the play. During our time which is defined by gender fluidity and emerging gender roles, this story is of particular interest.
2A: an evening of plays written by the students of Ms. Sandoval's 7th grade drama class
by Nathan Dame
April 2023
We are gathered today to see a presentation of short plays written by the students of Ms. Sandoval's 7th grade drama class. A small ensemble of professional actors from the local production of Aphra Behn's The Rover has come to perform their work. The plays are in turn funny, deep, dark, and have a surprising amount of candor about their life experiences and how they see the world they will inherit. Unfortunately, due to a sudden (and all-too-common) tragedy, the students couldn't be with us today to witness their words brought to life. Remarkably well-crafted, showing imagination in both the voice of the junior high writers and the grandiose acting of the local troupe players.
The Canterbury Tarot
by Ashley Naftule
July 2023
Set in a tavern outside space and time, "The Canterbury Tarot" puts on an occult spin on Geoffrey Chaucer's immortal classic. A group of pilgrims, waylaid by a violent storm, take refuge in a tavern and pass the time by telling stories. But rather than letting the Wife of Bath or the Miller or Knight do the talking, the pilgrims in this tavern are Major Arcana pulled from a deck of Tarot cards: Death, The Tower, The Chariot, The Empress, The Star, The Fool, Judgment, and The Wheel of Fortune. Inspired by the works of Chaucer, Neil Gaiman, and Annie Baker, "The Canterbury Tarot" is a freewheeling journey through a strange series of stories about druidic sacrifices, haunted heiresses, radiated messiahs, and the inevitable heat death of the universe.
