SYNOPSIS
“In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer’s budding teen life is turned
upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground
tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into
their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. As they travel through the
tale, Alice by Heart explores the poignancy of first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the
courage to move forward. This world premiere musical encourages us all to celebrate the
transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times.” - MTI
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Note: This is an ensemble-heavy show. All actors will be onstage for most, if not all, of the
production. All characters have a British dialect. Ages listed reflect the character, not necessarily
the actor. To view the play map for this production, click here .
ALICE SPENCER/ALICE | Female, 15-23.
Alice is a driven and imaginative young woman grappling with the challenges of growing up and
the grief of losing Alfred. Displaced from her family and living in a distressed situation, she uses
her fierce imagination and the world of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as a coping mechanism
to navigate this confusing time of transition. The actor playing Alice must possess excellent
stamina, a strong contemporary singing voice, and be a solid, bold performer willing to take risks,
as she is never offstage and sings in nearly every song.
Vocal Range Top: D5
Vocal Range Bottom: G3
ALFRED HALLAM/WHITE RABBIT/MARCH HARE | Male, 18-23.
Alice's ailing childhood friend and kind of love interest, Alfred, is a gentle and thoughtful young
man suffering from tuberculosis. He also embodies the manic, time-obsessed White Rabbit who
constantly tries to reach the story’s end; he also portrays the March Hare, who is bitter and
aggressive. The actor playing Alfred should possess sensitivity, nuance, and a strong
contemporary pop/rock singing voice.
Vocal Range Top: A4
Vocal Range Bottom: B2
RED CROSS NURSE/QUEEN OF HEARTS | Female, 30-40.
A tough, no-nonsense nurse who is in charge of the tube station. Her Wonderland counterpart,
the Queen of Hearts, is a domineering, childish figure who is obsessed with control and
punishment. This actor should have strong comedic timing and a strong singing voice, with the
ability to belt and riff.
Vocal Range Top: D5
Vocal Range Bottom: F#3
HAROLD PUDDING/MAD HATTER | Male, 18-22.
A soldier who has been deeply traumatized by the war. He is manic and frightened, but also funny
and charming. The Mad Hatter is demanding and full of nonsensical riddles - an embodiment of
chaos.
Vocal Range Top: F4
Vocal Range Bottom: C3
TABATHA/CHESHIRE CAT/CATERPILLAR 2 | Female, 18-23.
A street-smart young woman who serves as an almost mentor to Alice in her journey with grief.
She is fiercely loyal to those she wants to protect. As the Cheshire Cat, she is perpetually grinning
and mysterious and offers somewhat cryptic advice to Alice. This actor should have a strong
stage presence and voice, with a healthy belt mix.
Vocal Range Top: D5
Vocal Range Bottom: Bb3
DODGY/DUCHESS | Male, 18-22
A somewhat flamboyant street urchin, often with sticky fingers, who is sensitive beneath a tough
exterior. The Duchess is an over-the-top comedic woman. This actor needs strong comedic
timing.
Vocal Range Top: E4
Vocal Range Bottom: C3
CLARISSA/QUEEN OF DIAMONDS | Female, 17-22.
An upper-class young woman who is displaced by the war but struggles to give up her fancier
ways. Posh and polished, but uses this as a mask to hide her pain. The Queen of Diamonds is a
member of the Queen of Hearts’ court.
Vocal Range Top: D5
Vocal Range Bottom: B3
NIGEL/DORMOUSE | Male, 16-22.
A young boy traumatized by the bombings and the loss of his family. He is shy and anxious. The
Dormouse is sleepy, anxious, and sometimes overwhelmed by the chaos wielded by the Mad
Hatter and March Hare.
Vocal Range Top: Bb4
Vocal Range Bottom: E3
ANGUS/CATERPILLAR | Male, 18-23.
A working-class young man who escapes his problems by smoking an opium pipe. He is flirty,
charming, and tries to help others cope with life in the shelter. The Caterpillar is a mysterious and
somewhat seductive figure who challenges Alice’s beliefs.
Vocal Range Top: B4
Vocal Range Bottom: F3
DR. BUTRIDGE/KING OF HEARTS/JABBERWOCKY | Male, 35-50.
A fumbling and anxious doctor who works in the Underground shelter. AS the King of Hearts, he
bows to queen. As the Jabberwocky, he becomes a fearsome and taunting figure that represents
Alice’s regrets and grief. This role requires a strong character actor.
Vocal Range Top: G4
Vocal Range Bottom: C3
