Synopsis: OPEN HOUSE is an experimental site-specific play, performed in peoples’ homes in
the Phoenix metro area. Originally commissioned by The Foundry Theatre in New York, and
later performed in Novi Sad, Serbia in 2013, OPEN HOUSE is a small play about the big city, a
comedy of romantic failure, and a neighborhood meeting about the way we live now. The play
begins as a real estate open house, becomes a series of vignettes about the lives of a
contemporary young couple in a city that is rapidly changing around them, and ends as a glimpse
toward possible futures of the metropolis we call home.
Character Breakdown
1. RICK (race immaterial): 28-36, a hipster who refinishes furniture for a living. Thoughtful,
kind and emotionally open.
2. JANE (race immaterial): 28-36, a creative professional, highly intelligent, a little unfocused, a
personal trainer with unnamed artistic ambitions
3. THREE (race immaterial): 30-55, a real estate broker who loves the city of Phoenix very
much, and is both excited and challenged by the changes taking place here.
Additional Info: Ideal actors for OPEN HOUSE should be able to perform both fourth-wall
scenes and direct address to an intimate audience, should be open to new processes, and able to
perform subtly. Film or TV experience may be helpful, but is not required. Adventurous spirit a
must. This play will be re-written for the specific actors cast, and for Phoenix’s landmarks,
geography and history.
