Stanley Yelnats is under a multi-generational family curse, landing him unjustly at Camp Green Lake detention center. There, the warden forces the boys to dig holes five feet wide and five feet deep all day long. Stanley soon realizes they aren't building character—they are digging for a secret the warden desperately wants to hide.
