Auditions for ROOSTERS at Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre announced for January 14

Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre Actor’s Cafe Production of
ROOSTERS

Directed by Chris R. Chavez

Auditions will be held on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 6:00 pm at Desert Stages Theatre.

The setting is a simple wood-frame house in the American Southwest. Hector, a young campesino, is apprehensively awaiting the return of his father, Gallo, who has been serving a jail term for manslaughter. Gallo, who is obsessed with cock fighting, is a philandering, high-living macho type, who finds it difficult to communicate with, much less understand, his contemplative, questioning son.

The crux of the play is the battle for supremacy between the father, who wants to exploit the fighting cock which his son has been looking after for him, and Hector, who argues that they should sell the animal and use the proceeds for family needs. Drawn into the dispute are Hector’s sister, Angela, an otherworldly creature who wears angel wings and blots out unpleasant reality by hiding under the front porch; his lusty, profane aunt, Chata, whose overt sexuality is both fascinating and disturbing to her impressionable nephew; and his long-suffering mother, Juana, who wishes that her family would stop bickering and live in peace. Mingling scenes of explosive drama with moments of fanciful imagery, the play deftly blends its two natures as it moves to its conclusion when, in a theatrically magical moment, illusion and reality achieve a remarkable synthesis.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
This is an adult production. No roles have been pre-cast. Casting 3M/3F. All abilities and ages are encouraged to audition. All of the characters are Chicano/Mexican-American.

GALLO – 40’s; male presenting; a machismo father and husband recently released from prison and returning to his family. A stereotype of the machismo attitude and identity.

HECTOR – 20’s; male presenting; Gallo’s son; a rebel in that he opposes the stereotype of machismo culture and cock fighting, causing conflict with his father.

ANGELA – teen’s; female presenting; Hector’s religiously occupied sister; simple; possibly miraculous.

JUANA – 30’s-40’s; female presenting; a devoted and loving wife and mother. Tries to see the good in most everyone.

CHATA – 40’s-50’s; female presenting; Gallo’s sister; she loud, abrasive, flirty. A no-nonsense woman who doesn’t take anything from anyone.
