Audition submissions for MAD HATTER at Herberger Theater Center due by January 26

Individuals wishing to audition for this new version of the iconic classic, please reach out to info@madhatterthemusical.com  no later than Friday, January 26th by 12:00PM Mountain time. When writing please do include your pic/rez, the Principal and/or Ensemble role you are submitting for and most importantly in the subject line state the name MAD HATTER. We will then review all submissions and start in on the self-tape (followed by possible in-the-room auditions) process. 

Casting by Amber Snead, Associate Casting Directors at ARC in NYC. Over the years, ARC has cast THE LION KING, CHICAGO THE MUSICAL, GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY, LIFE OF PI, and numerous other Broadway, Touring and regional productions. [FRANKLIN] – FRANKLIN, male-identifying. 30 years old. English. The “Mad Hatter”. Stubborn, depressed, angry, curious husband and father of two, who finds his identity in Wonderland. He undergoes deep psychological changes as he journeys through Wonderland, unrooting and facing traumas from his past. Bari-tenor crossover. PRINCIPAL ROLE.

[MARYBETH/YOLA] – MARYBETH, female-identifying. 30 years old. English. Wife of Franklin. Positive, caring, compassionate, who loves her husband and will do anything for her children. Former ballet dancer, lower-middle class. YOLA, Head Cheshire Cat, protector of the crystal. Exotic sphinx-like creature, seductive, sassy. She unexpectedly falls in love with Franklin and is betrayed by him. MARYBETH PLAYS THE CHARACTER OF YOLA, FRANKLIN’S LOVE INTEREST IN
WONDERLAND. Mezzo-soprano, belter/lyrical. PRINCIPAL ROLE

[BARTHOLOMEW/FRANKLIN’S FATHER] –.BARTHOLOMEW, male-identifying. 40 years old. Bearded gentleman. Soulful, holy, wise. Smokes a pipe and owns a clock shop. FRANKLIN’S FATHER, male-identifying. 40 years old. The Mad Hatter’s father, senile. Grungy, hatter, stoic, angry, drunk. Baritone. SECONDARY PRINCIPAL ROLE.

[BOLA/TEXTILE SISTER 2] – BOLA, Cheshire Cat, Yola’s right hand. Sensual, sassy, but stern and proud. TEXTILE SISTER 2, female-identifying. 30 years old. Helper in her sister’s shop in London. Sensual, sassy, but stern and proud. BOLA PLAYS TEXTILE SISTER 2 IN THE OPENING SEQUENCE. Mezzo-soprano. SECONDARY PRINCIPAL ROLE.

[CATERPILLAR] – CATERPILLAR. Old-looking. Eclectic, beatnik, somber. Known for wisdom and transformation, he is a Wonderland staple and is always smoking his pipe. He is pivotal in Franklin’s enlightenment as he journeys through Wonderland. Baritone. SECONDARY PRINCIPAL ROLE

[PRIMROSE/YOUNG MARYBETH] - PRIMROSE, female-identifying. 10 years old. Daughter of Franklin and Marybeth. Pre-teen. Daddy’s girl, cute as a button, has a doll named Alice, fights with her brother constantly. Witty, charismatic, smart. YOUNG MARYBETH, female-identifying. 10 years old. Witty, passionate, caring, just. Comes to Franklin’s aid when he is being bullied. PRIMROSE PLAYS YOUNG MARYBETH IN THE OPENING SEQUENCE. Soprano. SECONDARY PRINCIPAL ROLE.

[THE QUEEN OF HEARTS/MERCURY] – THE QUEEN OF HEARTS. 25-45 years old. Ageless look.Classic, Victorian, dramatic ruler. Shallow, seductive, ruthless tyrant who takes pleasure in showing her power. MERCURY. Alluring, feminine, demonic silhouette, wearing a large top hat. She is poison personified, and responsible for every hatter’s demise. THE QUEEN OF HEARTS MAY DOUBLE AS MERCURY. Soprano. SECONDARY PRINCIPAL ROLE.

[ROLA/TEXTILE SISTER 1] - ROLA, Cheshire Cat, idolizes Yola, her shadow. Flighty, sassy, sensual. TEXTILE SISTER 1, female-identifying. 30 years old. Helper in her sister’s shop in London. Flighty, sassy, sensual. ROLA PLAYS TEXTILE SISTER 1 IN THE OPENING SEQUENCE. Soprano. SECONDARY PRINCIPAL ROLE.

[ROSE/MOTHER ROSE] – ROSE. 35 years old. Sweet, caring, nurturing, ballerina. Franklin’s mother. She loves her son and wishes for him to follow his heart, until that dream is stifled by her mad husband and a premature death. MOTHER ROSE, the most beautiful red rose in the Wonderland garden. Caring, regal, and the first encounter Franklin has in Wonderland. ROSE PLAYS THE MOTHER ROSE IN WONDERLAND.Mezzo-soprano. SECONDARY PRINCIPAL ROLE.

[PHILIP/YOUNG FRANKLIN/BAILEY] - PHILIP, male-identifying. 14 years old. Son of Franklin and Marybeth, momma’s boy, picks on his sister and has a complicated relationship with his father. Lonely. YOUNG FRANKLIN, male-identifying. 10 years old. Sweet, delicate, with a passion for dance. Momma’s boy. He is mistreated by his father when he refuses to follow his footsteps as a Hatter. BAILEY, The Field Mouse, The Time Keeper of Wonderland. Works for the Queen until he inspires the revolution. Cartoon-like character. PHILIP PLAYS YOUNG FRANKLIN IN THE OPENING SEQUENCE, AS WELL AS BAILEY, THE FIELD MOUSE, IN WONDERLAND. Tenor. SECONDARY PRINCIPAL ROLE.

[F. IDENTIFYING ENSEMBLE] - Wonderlandonians! Ensemble characters sometimes act as “greek chorus” to narrate the show while other times they are embedded in the drama, depicting locals of Wonderland. Vibrant characters with varying voice types. Members of the ensemble are required to dance and sing in harmony.
