"...an outstanding ensemble of six seasoned actresses, under the caring and keen direction of Cheryl Schaar, delivers sensitively textured performances...This cast has captured the audience in its net of compassion and mutual fidelity. The richness of this production lies not only in their exemplary performances but also, and most importantly, in Director Schaar's astute decisions and sensitive direction. 1. Wow! What a glowing review for a sub par show. There where good moments from some of the actors. I particularly enjoyed Martha Welty as Clairee. Martha was endearing and snarky all at the same time. Both the young actresses that played Shelby and Annelle where lovely and believable. The Truvy did an interesting take on backwoods barbie and had a fabulous moment with Shelby when doing her nails but no connection to anyone else and her costuming and wig was so off it was distracting. I was concerned when M'ynn and Ouiser apparently did not know their lines or what their why's are. I and my four guests left disappointed that this darling slice of life was a sad red velvet armadillo cake.

  2. I was really looking forward to this show because of Mr. Paine's raving review. I wish I could agree with him, but I found this show to be shallow and disappointing. Maybe I'm not a fair judge because I've seen Steel Magnolias done well several times and it's one of my favorites. The Don Bluth production, however, was missing the southern charm and heart that I expected to see. Rachel Brumfeld as Shelby was the one standout performance. The rest of the cast was fine, but Truvy and M'Lynn fell short.
Breona Conrad played her Truvy just this side of sleezy and did not embody the sweet southern charm that gives this show it's center and it's heart. It was a sad take on the charming person Truvy is written to be. Amie Bjorklund as M'Lynn was one note and never engaged her daughter or the audience. "Tepid" is the best description I can give to her ending melt down. The final scene of the show was sad and was missing the upbeat 'life goes on' message because M'Lynn is still acting like she is fighting back tears as she exits.
I heard this show was selling out before it even opened and that's because people love this play based on a true story and real people. Unfortunately, they will not see the show the playwright intended and may not know what they are missing.
