Fountain Hills Theater announces the auditions for the play Les Miserables School Edition.
Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France and the aftermath of the French Revolution, this timeless story of intertwined destinies reveals the power of compassion and the quiet evil of indifference to human suffering.
Performances will run from April 14-23, 2023, with a possible extension through April 30. Performances take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00PM and Sundays at 2PM.
Auditions will be held Saturday, Feb. 4 @ 3:00pm and Sunday, Feb 5 @ 11:00am. Callbacks (If required) Monday, Feb. 6 @ 5:00pm. Auditioners are asked to prepare an age-appropriate monologue from a previously published work, not to exceed 2 minutes in length, and 16 to 32 bars of an upbeat song or ballad that best shows off their voice. Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key (an accompanist will be provided). A CD or edited karaoke track in the proper key may be substituted for sheet music, but must be queued to the desired start, must contain music only with no vocal assist, and must come with any special connectors necessary for your playback device. Dress to move for dance audition following.
Video Auditions can be submitted prior to February 3rd, and may substitute for appearing at the Saturday and Sunday auditions. Candidates will be required to appear in person at callbacks on Monday, February 6th. Video should include 16 bars of a song showing off voice and range, an age appropriate monologue not to exceed 2 minutes in length, and a description of your dance background and ability. Casting only youth actors ages 10 through Highschool Seniors. All roles are open to all ethnicities. Actors should consider roles if they feel they can represent the age ranges listed.
Casting for:
Jean Valjean: the hero of the show, following his life journey.
Javert: the inspector who serves as antagonist to Jean Valjean.
Bishop Of Digne: The Bishop is a good man who saves Valjean’s soul through showing compassion
Fantine: the beautiful, young girl who, abandoned by her lover, is left to fend for herself and her daughter, Cosette
Young Cosette: Fantine’s daughter and the Theìnardiers’ ward.
Madame Thénardier: married to Theìnardier. Together, Madame Theìnardier and Theìnardier con the world as partners in crime.
Thénardier: the true villain. He is the embodiment of evil.
Young Eponine: the pampered daughter of the Theìnardiers. She does little except taunt Young Cosette.
Gavroche: Theìnardier’s son. He is left to fend for himself and lives by his wits in the streets of Paris.
Eponine: Living hand to mouth, she survives by helping her father in his life of crime.
Enjolras: the student leader. Handsome, brave, daring, although youthful, He combines his revolutionary ideals with strong, charismatic leadership.
Marius: The romantic hero of the story. He is impulsive, passionate, willful, and headstrong.
Cosette: Intelligent, inquiring, personable girl; she is not in any sense a sappy, romantic heroine.
Ensemble:
Chain Gang: Jean Valjean’s fellow prisoners. (five soloists)
Constables: (Two soloists)
The Factory Workers: (eight soloists)
Working-class Women: sing about the events at the barricade (4 soloists)
Foreman: The Foreman begins Fantine on her desperate, downward spiral.
Prostitutes: The Docks are a depressing and dangerous place to be, occupied by prostitutes and their customers. (four soloists)
Sailors: Three sailors begin the docks scene. (three soloists)
Bamatabois: the customer who taunts Fantine into violence.
Old Woman: purchases Fantine’s hair.
Pimp: controls the prostitutes at the docks.
Onlookers and Bystanders: make up the crowd othat witness the cart crash. (4 soloists).
Fauchelevant: the victim of the cart crash.
Judge(s): preside over a trial against Jean Valjean.
Mistaken Jean Valjean And Family: the man who Javert believes to be Jean Valjean.
Nuns: take care of Fantine in her sickness.
Gavroche’s Gang: Youth ages 8–10, a gang of kids who follow Gavroche around.
Theìnardier’s gang of thieves: Brujon, Babet, Claquesous, Montparnasse
Members of the ABC society (a secret society of students and workers): Combeferre, Feuilly, Courfeyrac, Joly, Prouvaire, Lesgles, Grantaire
Farmer, Laborers, Revolutionaries, Sentries, Army Officer, Major Domo, Wedding Guests
