Fountain Hills Theater announces the auditions for the musical The Quiltmaker’s Gift.

A mysterious old woman lives in the misty mountains, making beautiful quilts for the poor. Meanwhile, the greedy king is desperate to find happiness, assuming it will come from one of the many presents he has demanded from his subjects. When the old woman refuses to give the king a quilt, she starts him on a journey of self-discovery that takes them both on a whimsical adventure. 

The Quiltmaker’s Gift is directed by Wanda McHatton. The Quiltmaker’s Gift will play Dec. 2 -18, 2022.  Performances are on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30PM and Sundays at 2PM. The Quiltmaker’s Gift is presented through Special Arrangement with Dramatic Publishing.

Auditions will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 @ 12:00pm and Sunday, Oct. 16 @ 6:00pm.  Callbacks (If required) Tuesday, Oct. 18 @ 7:00pm. Auditioners are asked to sing 16- 32 bars of a song that best shows off their voice and range, this will be followed by a dance audition.  Early video auditions - which must be submitted prior to Oct. 15 – may be submitted and can substitute for appearing at the Sunday or Monday auditions.  The video should include a song showing off your voice and range and a 1-minute dance routine demonstrating the extent of your dance training.  However, if chosen from a video audition, candidates will be required to appear in person at the callbacks.  Video auditions should be sent to peter@fhtaz.org.  FHT prefers and encourages auditioners to be vaccinated.

Actors should consider roles if they feel they can represent the age ranges listed.  All roles are open to all ethnicities

Casting for:

THE CHILD: Male or female able to "look" 8-10 years old. The child is curious, imaginative and full of questions.

THE OLD MAN: This role has been precast with Alan J. Prewitt*, the play’s author.

THE QUILTMAKER: Female that appears to be in 60's but will consider younger adult depending on other casting. The Quiltmaker has an air of mystery about her. She has a magical connection to the forces of nature. The actor should be a very good singer.

THE CHORUS KING: The king is played at about age 45-50. He is lonely and sad, greedy and self-centered. He is in search of the one thing in the word that will make him happy. 

ENSEMBLE:  A Tenor, Alto, Soprano and Bass. They play a very important part in the musical and do numerous roles. Dancing ability is a plus as is the ability to harmonize. All ages from teens to adults will be considered for these roles. Ensemble can consist of anywhere from 4 to 10 people.

*The role of The Old Man will be portrayed by author Alan J. Prewitt.  Alan moved to Phoenix in 1980 he began writing and directing up to four plays each season for Phoenix Theatre’s Cookie Company, a company of professional adult actors performing for families, where he served as artistic director and playwright in residence with more than 70 produced scripts to his credit. He has been honored with numerous awards as a playwright and director in Phoenix and with such awards as the National Society of Arts and Letters Career Achievement Award, the AriZoni Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre and the Arizona Theatre Alliance Award for Outstanding Arts Education Programming. He is currently preparing several more scripts for publication.
