About the Show

Neil Simon, America's premier comic playwright, makes another hilarious foray into the world of modern relationships. Jake, a novelist who is more successful with fiction that with life, faces a marital crisis by daydreaming about the women in his life. The wildly comic and sometimes moving flashbacks played in his mind are interrupted by visitations from actual females. Jake's women include a revered first wife who was killed years earlier in an accident, his daughter who is recalled as a child but is now a young woman, his boisterous and bossy sister, an opinionated analyst, his current wife who is leaving Jake for another man, and a prospective third wife. Jake and his women definitely deliver.

Cast of Characters

Jake – Male: Jake is a writer who suffers from a delusion where the women in his life will pop into his mind and converse with him. He knows they are only in his mind, but he still calls for them whenever he needs to talk through personal issues or reminisce about happier days. He is currently married to Maggie with whom he has been going through a rough patch. Jake is witty, snarky, confident, creative, and charming, but struggles to connect with the women in his life, relying instead on the fantastical versions of them he creates in his mind.

Maggie – Female: Maggie is Jake’s second, and current, wife. Early in the relationship she was lively but still a little self-conscious. As the last 8 years have passed and she’s advanced in her career, Maggie has realized a disconnect between the woman she’s become and the idealized version of her that Jake has created in his mind. She loves Jake dearly but can’t stay with him unless he can see the version of herself that she has created instead of the version he has created.

Karen – Female: Jake’s sister Karen is a divorcee whose primary relationship now is with her television. She shares Jake’s snarky personality and the siblings thrive on self-deprecating humor. As much as she loves to irritate her brother, Karen loves Jake and wants to support and encourage him through his troubles. Their close connection in their troubled upbringing makes Karen the woman Jake trusts most with his heaviest tribulations.

Young Molly – Female: Jake’s daughter and the go-to person he summons in his mind when he needs cheering up. Despite losing her mother at a young age, Molly is a ball of sunshine, ever the optimist, insightful for her age, and she deeply wants to see her father happy again. She has inherited a bit of her father and aunt’s snark and teases Jake about his questionable dating prospects.

Older Molly – Female: Jake’s daughter at her current age, 10 years after her mother passed. She has mellowed out during her college years, becoming more insightful and wiser than even her father. That little girl is still hidden away inside though, wondering what life may have been like if she hadn’t lost her mother.

Edith – Female: Jake’s “New Age” psychiatrist. While her approach is far from conventional, maybe even borderline unethical, it’s effective. She’s tough on Jake, telling him what he needs to hear, no matter how harsh. She has no problem criticizing Jake and letting him unload his anger at her. She takes it with a grain of salt and a grin, because she knows she can get him to reveal the things he struggles to admit to himself.

Julie – Female: Jake’s first wife who passed in a car accident at 35. Julie is lively, carefree, passionate, and maybe a bit naïve. While Jake has been able to control most of the women he imagines, he’s never been able to control Julie’s manifestations in his mind. She initially struggles to understand that time and herself have passed, but desires to learn what all has transpired in Jake and Molly’s lives since that night.

Sheila – Female: Sheila is a businesswoman who has taken an interest in Jake. However, Jake has not been very open with her about his life and mental state. So, when Jake begins struggling to control the women in his mind, Sheila ends up having a very confused and comedic altercation with Jake and his mental manifestations.
