Arizona Theatre Company Artistic Director Sean Daniels Accepts New Role at Florida Studio Theatre

Arizona Theatre Company has announced that its Kasser Family Artistic Director, Sean Daniels, will be leaving ATC in spring 2023 to pursue a new opportunity as Florida Studio Theatre’s new associate director. Daniels has served as ATC’s artistic director and co-CEO since 2019, where he has helped produce and present award-winning dramas, comedies, musicals, world premieres and more.

“We respect this is an outstanding opportunity for Sean and his family on both a personal and professional basis,” said Arizona Theatre Company Board of Trustees Chair Char Augenstein. “While news like this is bittersweet, ATC has assembled an exemplary team of professional leaders, along with a committed Board of Trustees, who will work seamlessly together in identifying Sean’s successor.”

She notes that under the leadership of Managing Director Geri Wright, and with Sean in the artistic director role, ATC has “emerged from the pandemic as a stronger organization equipped to thrive in uncertain and changing times.”

During his remaining ATC tenure, Daniels will continue in his role while the ATC Board of Trustees and staff develop a succession plan and undertake a nationwide search for the next Artistic Director. Daniels is currently directing the 55th season opening show The Lion, which begins its Tucson run on Saturday, Sept. 24 and continues through Oct. 15, and then runs in Phoenix Oct. 20 through Nov. 6. He also will direct the world premiere of Pru Payne in spring 2023 (in Tucson from March 4 through 25, and in Phoenix from March 30 through April 16).

“ATC has an exciting season coming up, and I’m dedicated to ensuring the success of every production,” Daniels said. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done during my tenure at Arizona Theatre Company, as we worked through the greatest challenges ever to face the theatre world. I am likewise very proud of the team currently in place, poised to lead ATC into the future.”

In this new senior leadership position at Florida Studio Theatre, Daniels will oversee the New Play Development Program, manage the Stage III Program, and serve as a resident director for all FST stages. Additionally, he will lead the kickoff of FST’s newest endeavor, The Recovery Project, which will work to remove the stigma of addiction and recovery through the development of new plays, theatre-education programs and outreach.

Prior to joining ATC, Daniels served as artistic director of Merrimack Repertory Theatre and Dad’s Garage (which he co-founded), as well as associate artistic director at California Shakespeare Theatre and Actors Theatre of Louisville.
