Synopsis:  Lies ripped from actual headlines that smeared the reputation of the reclusive heiress, Sarah Winchester, come back to haunt five people who wrote them. The characters and their stories are based on documented facts. The plot is fiction: A mysterious host traps them in a graveyard behind Sarah Winchester’s notoriously haunted mansion, where they must either admit to their complicity in a hoax that haunts Mrs. Winchester’s legacy to this very day, or else…

Roles:

John Brown: male: lead: bass. A carnival promoter who turned an earthquake-damaged mansion into a tourist trap by falsely advertising that the building was haunted. A natural at exploiting the sensational and the public’s gullibility, he laughs all the way to the bank.

Mayme Brown: female: lead: mezzo-soprano or alto. She’s devoted to and protective of her husband, John Brown, yet sometimes feels guilty about her role in helping him spread mean-spirited lies about the good woman they slandered in order to publicize their haunted house.

Ruth Amet: female: lead: soprano. An “old maid” newspaper reporter. She’s brighter, quicker and more knowledgeable than the others in the group. Perhaps men feel threatened by her wit and intelligence, or perhaps there is another reason why she hasn’t married.

John G. Robinson: male: lead: baritone. A pompous, wealthy toady who supplements his inheritance by dabbling in the newspaper business. He hobnobs with celebrities and politicians in order to enhance his professional and social stature.

Joe Custer: male: lead: tenor. Sports reporter, war correspondent, boxing promoter, events organizer, radio personality, and all-American, devil-may-care derring-do who milks his status as a war hero and Purple Heart recipient to rise to greater professional and social prominence.

Sigmund Freud: male: supporting: countertenor. Founder of psychoanalysis, playing himself and a butler.
