About the Show
Jesus Christ Superstar is a groundbreaking rock opera that reimagines the final days of Jesus through a modern, urgent musical lens. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the story unfolds primarily through the perspective of Judas, whose doubts and disillusionment propel the narrative toward its inevitable conclusion. Set against a vividly contemporary sound world, the show explores themes of faith, power, celebrity, and human frailty with a clarity that remains striking over fifty years after its debut. Featuring iconic songs like “Heaven on Their Minds,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Gethsemane,” this fast-paced and emotionally charged score invites performers and audiences alike to grapple with questions that feel as resonant today as ever.
Jesus Christ Superstar will be approximately 2 hours, including a 15-minute intermission.

MTAA’s Showcase offers a unique kind of theatre experience. You’ll see a full musical performed with a live orchestra—but without sets, costumes, or choreography. Instead, the focus is on the music, the characters, and the story. With just two rehearsals, there’s a fresh energy to every production. Performers carry scripts, scenes are minimally staged, and what unfolds onstage is part concert, part storytelling, and entirely in the moment. It’s a one-night-only glimpse into the heart of a musical, performed by singers and instrumentalists from across the state.
