A play about punks in love, puppets, and the gentrification of downtown… every downtown. PEPPERMINT BEEHIVE follows office drone Rikki Richman, who follows a bewitching stranger named Jamie Dayglo down to Rushmore Street, an artsy neighborhood full of puppets, goblins, roving gangs of mimes, and communes. Everything is all fun and games until the corporate sharks from Rikki’s world smell blood in the water and bring “progress” to the neighborhood. Can Rikki, Jamie, and the puppets save their little corner of the world or will gentrification swallow them whole?
Character Breakdown
Seeking (All persons of any ethnicity are encouraged to audition):
Jamie Dayglo (20 to early 30’s, transwoman): Like Lana Turner on acid. A femme fatale with a heart of gold, a bad smoking habit, and a magic-realist hair style. Loves easily, trusts rarely.*
Officer Dudley (30’s to 40’s, male-presenting): Power-tripping, insecure but hides it under too much swagger,, a mad dog in search of a master. A ventriloquist who hates his new dummy partner, Kettle.**
Angela Ampersand (20 to early 30’s, female): Girl boss, business queen, a Silicon Valley shark who hides her teeth beneath layers of wellness cliches and therapyspeak. Nice but not kind.
Angelo Ampersand (20 to early 30’s, male): Alpha business bro w/ a head full of hand-me-down thoughts from podcasts. Let’s get this paper, bro. Plays dumb but is actually devious.
Two Puppeteers (any age, gender): plays a wide variety of characters (including a talking banana, a worm poet, a sax-playing goblin, and a karaoke jockey). Ability to do different voices (both male and female characters) a huge plus.
*This role is specifically written to be played by someone from the trans community.
**The actor cast as Dudley will also be playing Kettle. Prior ventriloquism/puppetry experience is not required but wouldn’t hurt.
The roles of Rikki Richman and Shirley Phantom have already been cast.
