Valley Youth Theatre’s production of SPOOKLEY THE SQUARE PUMPKIN

Based on the book "The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin" written by Joe Troiano, the film "Spookley the Square Pumpkin" written by Joe Troiano and Tom Hughes, and the stage production directed and conceived by Jeff Frank and First Stage

In-Person Auditions: Monday August 14th @ 4pm at Valley Youth Theatre, 525 N 1st Street, Phoenix AZ. (doors open at 3:30pm)

For auditions please bring:

1.) A song that will show off your voice and is appropriate for you and the character you are auditioning for. Please bring sheet music -- accompanist will be provided.

2.) A headshot. It doesn't have to be professional. Just a good photo that looks like you!

3.) An acting or theatre resume.

Video Audition submissions: Having you audition in-person is preferred, however if you’re unable to attend our in-person auditions on August 14th, you are welcome to submit a video audition. Please note that your video must be received before August 14th to be considered. 

To audition via video, please:

2.       Send us a Headshot/Photo – This is submitted via the audition form mentioned above. 

Photo doesn't have to be professional. Just a good photo that looks like you! Make sure you have good lighting so we can see your face. 

3.       Send us a video of you performing one song and one monologue of your choosing. Links to Youtube, Vimeo, etc are fine, just make sure to email the link(s) to stagemanager@vyt.com


Rehearsals: Approximate rehearsal dates are August 23 through October 5th, Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturdays. Before tech, evening rehearsals are expected to be 5pm - 9pm; tech rehearsals will potentially go until 11pm.

Performances: October 6-29th, 2023 at Valley Youth Theatre, with several weekday matinees for schools in addition to the traditional evening and weekend performances.

PLEASE NOTE: Strike will not take place on closing night (10/29). It will take place a few days later on Wednesday November 1st. All cast, crew, and parents are required to attend, so please plan accordingly.

Synopsis:

Spookley The Square Pumpkin: The Musical tells the story of a square pumpkin living in a round pumpkin patch on Holiday Hill Farm. Shunned by the other pumpkins, Spookley is befriended by Edgar, Allan and Poe, three hilarious spiders who convince him that, square or not, he has a right to be the Pick of the Patch. Encouraged by kindly Jack Scarecrow, Spookley tries his best, but he isn't sure he has what it takes until a mighty storm threatens Holiday Hill Farm. Spookley realizes it is up to him and his square shape to save the day. As a result, all the pumpkins in the patch learn that the things that make you different make you special. 

Characters:

Jack Scarecrow: Kind, friendly scarecrow of Holiday Hill Farm, who is friend to all pumpkins, melons, and spiders alike.

Spookley: A sweet, square pumpkin who initially gets teased and rejected by the others in the patch for looking different, but whose thoughtfulness and courage saves the day. Spookley will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet.

Big Tom: Big Tom is a lovable, gentle pumpkin but has a hard time making his own decisions. Big Tom will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet.

Little Tom: Big Tom’s bossy little brother who encourages the rest of the patch not to accept Spookley. Starts out as a bully, but in the end learns that being unique is a good thing. Little Tom will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet.

Bobo: The prettiest pumpkin in the patch (and she knows it) who loves to sing with her friends and backup singers, Mimi and Lala. Bobo will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet.

Mimi: A honeydew melon, and one of Bobo’s backup singers. Mimi will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet.

Lala: A honeydew melon, and one of Bobo’s backup singers. Lala will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet.

Edgar: Edgar the spider is a lovable, yet gruff little spider, who acts as the leader of the spider friends. Edgar will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet. Edgar will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet.

Allen: Allen the spider is a good friend and a great team player. The strong silent type, Allen will speak up when there is something to be said. Allen will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet.

Poe: The lovable, sweet spider of the group, Poe is a good-natured yet simple spider. Poe will be portrayed on stage by an actor with a puppet.
 
Valley Youth Theatre is a professional quality theatre where young people take center stage. There are no fees to audition and our performers do not pay to be in shows. There are no costume or script deposits, ticket quotas or ad sales. We ask for nothing but commitment, hard work and fun!
