"Charles Fuller's 1981 Pulitzer Prize winning drama A Soldier's Play is an intriguing murder mystery and also an evocative exposé of racism in the military. Set on a segregated Army base in 1944, it depicts how Black soldiers were treated and how some white members of the military struggled with having their Black counterparts in charge. The fact that 80 years later issues of racism are still in the news almost daily and that some people are still not accepting of minorities in authority positions unfortunately shows how relevant the play remains today. The national tour of the recent Tony Award winning 2020 Broadway revival comes to town for a week-long run in a fantastic production led by Norm Lewis...takes place at the fictional Ft. Neal, Louisiana, and begins with the murder of the mean and tyrannical Sergeant Vernon Waters, an officer who often berates the Black men under him who he believes should behave more like the white soldiers. After Waters is shot and killed on a country road outside of the base, presumably by members of the Ku Klux Klan, a series of cover-ups and accusations are set in motion, leading to an investigation overseen by Captain Richard Davenport, a rare Black Army investigator...Lewis may be better known for his musical theatre performances but here he proves that he is equally at home in dramas with a refined portrayal of Davenport, a detailed yet fair man." - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)
