audition notice - SOUTH PACIFIC - Fountain Hills Theater - July 18 & July 19

Arkansas native Nellie Forbush befriends and quickly falls for Emile de Becque, a French expatriate and plantation owner, and Lt. Joe Cable finds himself in a passionate affair with Liat, the young daughter of Bloody Mary, the local grass-skirt peddler. As the war against Japan escalates, reality sets in for both Forbush and Cable, who struggle to reconcile their unconventional love affairs with their long-held prejudices and insecurities.

     
Audition Dates: Saturday, July 18th at 3:00pm and Sunday, July 19th at 7:00pm
Callbacks: Following Sunday Auditions if needed

Production dates: Friday, September 4th - Sunday, September 20th
Possible extension through September 27th
Performances: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm

Auditioners should prepare:
-16-32 bars of a song that best shows off their voice
 (Bring sheet music in appropriate key. No CD’s)
-Dress to move for dance audition
-Headshot and resume if available
-List of possible rehearsal conflicts
Singing from the script and additional dancing will take place at callbacks if necessary.
 
CASTING:
Nellie Forbush: Female, ages 20-30, Caucasian. A spunky nurse and “cockeyed optimist” from Arkansas, eager to see the world, and discover new people and places, swept away by the widower De Becque, her deep feelings for him run headlong into her own prejudice when she discovers he is the father of mixed race children. [Mezzo with low A].

Emile De Becque: Male, ages 45-55, Caucasian. A mature, sophisticated, wealthy French expatriate, De Beque came to the islands 15 years earlier, built a plantation, married a Polynesian woman who bore him two children, but died during childbirth, elegant demeanor, had to leave France under mysterious circumstances and come to these formally tranquil islands as a sanctuary. Must have good French accent. [Bass/Baritone with high E].

Bloody Mary: Female, ages 35-45, Asian, Southeast Asian / Pacific Islander. A peddler of local trinkets, like Billis, she is always working the angles to advance her standings, endearing to the sailors, calculating and manipulative, a seductress in her day, peddles her daughter to Cable as her next move up the ladder, a player. [Mezzo with low G].

Liat: Female, ages 18-20, Asian, Southeast Asian / Pacific Islander. Bloody Mary’s daughter, pure, innocent, playfully childlike but equally intoxicating, “saved” by her mother for just the right moment and just the right man, truly falls in love with Cable at first sight. Non-singing role.

Lt. Joe Cable: Male, ages 22-32, Caucasian. A Princeton graduate, brave, intelligent, and focused on his girl and the future awaiting him back home in Philadelphia after the war, veteran of Guadacanal, he is here to establish a coast watch when he unexpectedly falls in love with the young Tonkinese girl Liat, torn between honor and passion he is unprepared for the feelings that overwhelm him. [Tenor with high G].

Luther Billis: Male, ages 25-35, Caucasian. Comic relief ,an entrepreneurial, fast-dealing seabee who charms and bribes his way through the war, has scant concern for military authority and stays one step ahead of his superiors. [Baritone]

Capt. George Brackett: Male, ages 45-55, Caucasian. Authority on the navel outpost, tasked with implementing the Coast Watch, he is Cable’s superior and works to recruit De Beque for the mission. Non-singing role.

Cmdr. William Harbison: Male, ages 30-40, Caucasian. Brackett’s second in command, works with Cable to recruit De Beque and to keep Billis in line. Non-singing role.

Ngana: Female, ages 8-12, Southeast Asian / Pacific Islander, Ethnically Ambiguous / Mixed Race. De Becque’s Polynesian daughter.

Jerome: Male, ages 8-12, Southeast Asian / Pacific Islander, Ethnically Ambiguous / Mixed Race. De Becque’s Polynesian son.

Sailors and Nurses: Males & Females, ages 18-30, Caucasian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Ethnically Ambiguous / Mixed Race (Chorus / Ensemble) for a large singing ensemble consisting of nurses, sailors, islanders and nuns.
