Poseidon’s Regret, by John Perovich, is a world premiere production, featuring a cast of Brelby alumni and production team of experienced Brelby artists.
Poseidon’s Regret follows the story of Eli Meloy and his fiancĂ© Claire along with a motley crew of pirates. “John has crafted a beautiful journey toward self-discovery in the guise of a modern day pirate tale,” says director Carolyn McBurney. “A young man who never knew his father learns too late of his existence, when he inherits a lighthouse filled with family secrets. Eli and his expectant fiancĂ©e are drawn into a sea-faring adventure that has been a treat to create on stage. The characters are colorful and the writing is first rate.“
“I began Poseidon's Regret about a year ago as a writing exercise from Brian Maticic, Executive Director of Brelby Theatre Company. Since then, I have traveled to Maine to further research the location of the play and heavily developed the script this past fall in THP 560: Dramatic Writer's Workshop at Arizona State University, under the instruction of Professor Guillermo Reyes. In the spring, the play received a reading at Brelby and underwent further rewrites, “ explains playwright John Perovich. “I'm excited to finally share Poseidon's Regret with our audience at Brelby—where the play essentially began. Poseidon's Regret is a contemporary fairy tale stuck in a world that is somewhere between every day life and a sea shanty. I hope audiences will enjoy the theatrical nature of how the story unfolds—expect magic and adventure in this play about regret and reconciliation.”
Poseidon’s Regret features returning performances by several Brelby artists; Mat Vansen as Eli (Beyond Musketeers: Utopia Lost, Little Women, 12 Days), Cody Goulder as Jabipidy Jones (Beyond Musketeers: Utopia Lost, Fools), Willa Eigo as Claire (Beyond Musketeers: Utopia Lost, She Kills Monsters), Brian Maticic as Bill/Joe (12 Days of Christmas, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Twelfth Night), Melody Knudson as Marin (Fools, She Kills Monsters, Telemachus Darling) and Bob Peters as Cyrus/Avery (Loves Labours Lost, Collapse)
