"...has moments that thrill, especially in the re-creation of Michael Bennett's original choreography which is danced very well by the large cast, but it also falls short of being a deeply moving and soaring production due to some flat acting and singing and the decision to insert an intermission, which stops the momentum of the, at times, searing drama. ...The Phoenix Theatre cast are all adept dancers who skillfully present Bennett's choreography. However, under Jeff Whiting's direction and Dr. Randi Rudolph's music direction, not all of the scenes and songs are effective...the intimacy of Phoenix Theatre's mainstage provides a beautiful connection between the audience and the characters, some of the performances come across as flat, rushed and uninspired....While this production, unfortunately, isn't exceptional, hearing such classic showtunes as "What I Did for Love," "One," and "At the Ballet," and having a cast who are all talented dancers re-create Michael Bennett's famous choreography in an intimate setting makes up for most of the production's shortfalls and manages to send you dancing out of the theatre on a high." - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)
"The original was spell-binding so to revive it successfully you MUST duplicate the original’s gripping impact, something the TPTC production never achieves. We do not become involved with these performers because no one inhabits these people; these are always actors playing roles.“A Chorus Line” disappoints on all counts. "At rise of curtain, the bare stage of a Broadway Theater becomes the single, solitary, set of The Phoenix Theatre Company's dynamic and ultimately exhilarating new production of the 1975 musical A CHORUS LINE. The Phoenix Theatre Company's production has assembled a standout ensemble of performers who, like the characters they're portraying, project their individual qualities as actors when called upon to answer Zach's probing, often personal questions, but can fall back and blend once again with the others when required to sing and dance as one....It's not just a handsome production; to date it's the standout of the current season." -David Appleford, Broadway World (click here to read the complete review)
