Spotlight Youth Theatre's 2021 / 2022 Season!

Our 2021-2022 season is an exciting mix of recent winning musicals, classic favorites, and fresh original works!

As the season begins, Spotlight remains cautious about the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Even though we’re excited to get back to staging large shows, we urge everyone to be careful. For the time being, masks are still required in our theatre due to the vaccinated population not including children.

FUN HOME

Ages 8-19
The acclaimed musical reflecting on coming out and dark family secrets, to be performed Sep. 17–Oct. 3, 2021.

Book & Lyrics by Lisa Kron
Music by Jeanine Tesori
Based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel

Graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of her volatile, brilliant, and one-of-a-kind father whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Alison relives her unique childhood of playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires.

Parental guidance suggested for language and intense themes.

Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes. This musical is also a critical smash, having won numerous awards and accolades including the 2015 Tony for Best New Musical.

PEACE, LOVE AND CUPCAKES

An anti-bullying musical about “socially invisible” girls who find empowerment in a cupcake club, to be performed Dec. 3–19, 2021.

Book, Music, & Lyrics by Rick Hip-Flores
Based on the book by Sheryl Berk & Carrie Berk

Ages: 8–13

Kylie Carson has a big problem: she’s different. And different isn’t necessarily a good thing in seventh grade. Kylie loves vampires, zombies, and all things pertaining to monster movies—one of the many reasons why kids at her new school avoid her like the Creature from the Black Lagoon. To sweeten up her image—and find a place where she belongs—Kylie organizes the club “Peace, Love & Cupcakes,” attended by three other socially invisible girls. But, they have to face up to Meredith Mitchell, Blakely Middle School’s resident Queen Bee, who tries to sabotage their efforts!

This is a musical that celebrates kid power, friendship, and standing up for who you are and what you believe in.
