"Stephen Sondheim has written the scores for more than a dozen musicals, won multiple Tony Awards, and also received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. While many people may be familiar with the songs from his shows, they may not know much about the man behind the music. The musical revue Sondheim on Sondheim attempts remedy this by using video segments in which Sondheim speaks about his life, his working habits, his music, and the creation process. With a gifted cast who expertly navigate their way around the 40 songs in the show, and spirited direction, The Phoenix Theatre Company's production is a treat for Sondheim fans as well as a perfect way for those who only know a little bit about the composer to get a better understanding of his life...Robert Kolby Harper's clear and concise direction adds a big shot of energy to the production and the staging of the show, with the audience seated on two facing sides of the stage, with only 125 seats in total, provides a sense of intimacy that allows the focus to be on the lyrics and the actions of the characters and performers singing the song. The cast of six are all excellent vocalists and refined actors who deliver the lyrics with clarity and have no problem navigating their way around some of Sondheim's more intricate songs...."   -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)

"Stephen Sondheim has penned a rich collection of song hits in his many Broadway musicals.   His profound lyrics and stunning melodies are showcased in the recent Broadway revue, “Sondheim on Sondheim,” which The Phoenix Theatre Company mounts in a wonderfully sung and marvelously staged local premiere production....Brandon Brown, Rusty Ferracane, Merissa Haddad, Amy Jo Halliday, Jonathan Hoover, and Kathlynn Rodin sing over 40 tunes with touching feeling on the reflective numbers and comic joy on the humorous ones...." -Chris Curcio, Curtain Up Phoenix (click here to read the complete review)
