A zany rich-boy-meets-hometown-girl romantic comedy, CRAZY FOR YOU® tells the story of young New York banker Bobby Child, who is sent to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a rundown theatre. In Deadrock, Bobby falls for spunky Polly Baker, the theater owner’s daughter. But Polly takes an instant dislike to the city slicker, so Bobby vows – through cunning, razzmatazz, and a hilarious case of mistaken identity – to win Polly’s heart and save the theatre. Memorable Gershwin tunes from the score include “I Got Rhythm,” “Naughty Baby,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “Embraceable You,” “But Not for Me,” “Nice Work if You Can Get It,” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.”
Character Breakdown
Bobby Child – triple threat, lead male, falls in love with Polly, terrific tap dancer, doesn’t want the life his mother wants for him. Dreams of being in the Zangler Follies. Must have great comedic chops, also impersonates Bela Zangler, lives in New York. Mother wants him to stay in family business as a banker. He wants to be in the Follies. Falls in love with Polly, who does not return that love right away.
Polly Baker – strong female lead, triple threat, prefer a terrific tap dancer, grounded strong woman who doesn’t want to settle for just any man from her town, slight tomboy, only woman in Deadrock. Love interest to Bobby, but it’s complicated.
Bela Zangler – Follies Producer in NYC. Hungarian accent. Comedic, sophisticated. Desperately in love with his dance director Tessie, though he is married.
Mother/Patricia Fodor – this actress will play two roles. Bobby’s overbearing mother who is all about their business. And Patricia Fodor- english tourist who visits Deadrock with her brother Eugene.
Everett/Eugene Fodor – this actor will play two roles. Everett – Polly’s father, endearing, kind man. And Eugene, english tourist who visits Deadrock with his sister Patricia.
Irene – New York society debutant who thinks she is engaged to Bobby Child, who truly doesn’t wish to be with her. She is elegant, brash, dry humored, money hungry, and just wants to be loved.
Lank -Saloon owner in Deadrock. Wants Polly to marry him, she has no interest. Is angry with the town for trying to put up a musical in Deadrock. Ends up falling for Irene. Intimidating character, gruff.
5 men/5 women – dancing/acting/singing ensemble (tap, jazz)
Women- all dancers from the Zangler Follies. They come to Deadrock to help Bobby put on a show to save the theatre in town that belongs to Polly and her father. Each of these women has a distinct personality.
Men- will mostly play the men of Deadrock Nevada, think uneducated rough and tumble cowboys. Will also fill in other roles in the show as needed, Mother’s business assistant Perkins etc. 3 men who sing “Biding My Time” must be excellent with harmonies.
What To Prepare
Please prepare a 16 or 32 bar selection in the style of the show. Gershwin is preferred, or quite simply, sing what you do best. Please have your sheet music in the correct key, and cuttings marked clearly.
