THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS - Black Theatre Troupe - April 5 – 23, 2016
Book by David Thompson; Music by John Kander; Lyrics by Fred Ebb
a co-production with Phoenix Theatre
Set in 1933 the legend of the Scottsboro Boys has been realized as a poignant and powerful musical. The Black Theatre Troupe and Phoenix Theatre join forces to present this powerful story of racial injustice that even today demands that its voice be heard.
Before the Central Park Five, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter and The Black Panther’s, Geronimo Pratt there were the Scottsboro Boys.
No other crime in American history – let alone a crime that never occurred – is seen as the landmark set of legal cases stemming from racism that set legal precedent for every citizen to have the right to a fair trial-a fitting and enduring legacy for these nine young Black men. Nine lives that mattered.
