"The musical Hell's Kitchen has undeniable energy while also providing a strong sense of place and time, even if its plot isn't always that engaging. This semi-autobiographical musical, inspired by composer and pop singer Alicia Keys' life of growing up in New York City in the 1990s, features a fairly simple coming-of-age story, with the plot at times occasionally feeling more like something we've seen numerous times in other films, TV shows, and stage productions. Still, there is much to admire in the national tour, particularly in the vocal abilities of its cast and how the musical manages to use Keys' songs to weave together the emotional elements in the main character's journey while also creating a vivid sense of Manhattan in the 1990s."   - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)

"Vocally, the show is an absolute powerhouse. Both(Maya) Drake as Ali and (Kennedy) Caughell as her mother deliver the kind of soaring, emotionally raw vocals that can make the Gammage auditorium feel momentarily like Madison Square Garden....It’s a dynamic rich with possibility, but the show never quite deepens it enough to carry the full emotional weight being asked of it. The strain shows most clearly in the book. The central conflict between mother and daughter, stretched across much of Act Two, feels as though it might have been resolved in minutes
