The Tony Award nominations were just announced and Arizona’s only Tony Award voter is getting ready for Broadway’s biggest night.
Fashion designer and ASU graduate, Deven Tso has created a one-of-a-kind dress - a special creation to be worn by Arizona’s only Tony Award voter and ASU Gammage executive director, Colleen Jennings-Roggensack.
Colleen's gown is a sister dress to one of Deven's previous designs that paid homage to his grandmother. The design features a turquoise velvet as the main fabric, with a square neckline and a dress outline similar to that of a pencil skirt. It also includes an intricate hand and machine- embroidered design on the front and back. The use of velvet in the dress is a reclamation of the fabric: Velvet was never a fabric that was a part of traditional Native clothing, but instead it was worn as a result of assimilation.
Deven Tso is a 22-year-old Phoenix native who blends Navajo traditions with modern fashion to influence Native perspectives on clothing. He will graduate May 2026 from The ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts in the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM). He likes to push the boundaries of what Native clothing can look like with his designs. Deven's mentors and friends at ASU have supported him the most along his fashion journey, along with the studio space that ASU provided. He plans on finishing his master’s program and then freelancing in the fashion world
“Deven has outdone himself,” Jennings-Roggensack said. “I am honored to wear this beautiful dress on the red carpet and show the rest of the world how talented and innovative ASU students are. He has captured family heritage in this design, telling a story through fabric that celebrates identity, legacy and creativity in a truly unforgettable way.”
The Tony Awards are set for Sunday, June 7, at Radio City Musical Hall in New York City.
