Arizona Theatre Matters (ATM) is proud to announce a transformative moment in its creative journey: the public reading of The Ferryman’s Toll, an evocative new work co-written by Jeanmarie Simpson, Samantha King, and Dylan Brody. Directed by the acclaimed Michael Rawley, the reading will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM Arizona Time (12:00 PM Pacific, 2:00 PM Central, 3:00 PM Eastern) via Zoom. This event is free to attend, but advance reservations are required.
A production born from deeply personal narratives, The Ferryman’s Toll initially emerged from an intense, long-form exploration of childhood traumas and shared histories crafted by Simpson and King. With unparalleled skill, Dylan Brody brought his celebrated dramaturgical acumen to the project, infusing it with dramatic tension, nuanced character arcs, and a cohesive narrative structure that transformed the raw material into a play of profound depth and universal resonance. The result is a piece that bridges the intimate and the theatrical, inviting audiences to traverse an emotional underworld while reflecting on the resilience of the human spirit.
“The funny and courageous work of these two women, both in the play and in the creation of the play, reminds us of the human capacity for healing—when we stop protecting our wounds," said Brody.
The result is a gripping theatrical work that navigates an emotional underworld, revealing the strength it takes to confront one’s vulnerabilities and find paths to healing.
Brody, an award-winning playwright, humorist, and author, has earned acclaim for his incisive wit and mastery of narrative craft. His portfolio includes the Stanley Drama Award-winning Mother, May I and a distinguished career of performances and publications. His unique literary voice has shaped The Ferryman’s Toll into a richly textured and deeply resonant experience.
"Dylan has elevated our work beyond anything we imagined," said Simpson. "His ability to balance emotional authenticity, dramatic structure, and humor has evolved this into an extraordinary play."
The January 18 reading will feature Dylan Brody as Dr. Clark, Samantha King as Alexandra, and Jeanmarie Simpson as Marguerite. With decades of theatrical experience and intimate connections to the material, this ensemble infuses the story with profound depth and insight. The Ferryman’s Toll delves into trauma, memory, and dark humor, creating a work that is as compelling as it is cathartic.
