BLK BOX PHX's 2019 / 2020 Season!
BLK BOX PHX is proud to announce its second season. Where theatre and art intersects.
THE BURN
by Philip Dawkins
Oct. 25 - Nov. 10, 2019
When a high school production of THE CRUCIBLE forces students together, tensions escalate into acts of bullying—both online and in real life. THE BURN explores what happens to a teacher and his students when a classroom conflict turns into an online witch hunt. Featuring snippets from the Arthur Miller classic THE CRUCIBLE (1953), THE BURN is about bullying, but so much more than that. The demonization of the 'Other', which is increasing in our society as well as around the world. The play was originally presented at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago (2018).
BAUER
by Lauren Gunderson
Nov. 22 - Dec. 8, 2019
Love. Art. Defiance. The visceral and visual true story of forgotten modern artist Rudolf Bauer, struggling with his fading place in the history of art. It’s a story of an artist as a broken man. Set in 1953 at the New Jersey mansion, BAUER imagines a meeting between the painter and his one time close friend, champion & the curator of the Guggenheim Museum, Hilla von Rebay. Bauer hasn’t painted in more than a dozen years, but watch as passion and vengence become front and center in this story.
THE TRUTH ABOUT SANTA (AN APOCOLYPTIC HOLIDAY TALE)
by Greg Kotis
Dec. 20 - Dec. 23, 2019
Santa Claus is tired of the lies. Like the gods of old, he, too, has his mortal mistresses. This Christmas Eve he will bring Mary, his favorite earthly consort, and Luke and Freya, their illegitimate, semi-divine children, back to his North Pole compound to live with him—forever! Not surprisingly, Mrs. Claus resists. Many people think they know the truth about Santa, but they are wrong. Santa has some shocking unadvertised powers, a couple of half-mortal offspring his wife hasn’t found out about yet, and a lot on his mind. He’s tired of those singing elves. He’s tired of the lies. This is the Christmas Santa will reveal his true self. And it's definitely not for kids who believe in Santa.
RED
by John Logan
May. 8 - May. 17, 2020
It is the late 1950s and Mark Rothko, the Master Abstract Expressionist painter, is at a crossroads in his career. Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant inside the Seagram’s Building. The play takes place in Rothko’s studio on the Bowery, where he works feverishly with the help of a smart, young assistant Ken. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his biggest achievement could also become his undoing. Will his paintings survive in a place that represents everything—greed, commercialism, bourgeois comfort—he detests?
