"...an insightful, moving, and heartbreaking drama that focuses on the strong connection and love between parents and children and how the high expectations some parents have of their children can never truly be fulfilled, having a negative impact on both parent and child. Arizona Theatre Company presents the American premiere of the play in a beautifully designed co-production with the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, where the play ran in March, that features a talented cast who superbly embody their characters, warts and all. It is a deeply meaningful and modern study of the ups and downs of a more than 30-year long marriage and the struggles a family goes through. Most likely, everyone will see some reflection of themselves in the play's fractured characters......Clements' direction is faultless. The cast of six have been living and breathing these parts for more than two months now, and they clearly know them inside and out. Each actor is superb, with Jordan Baker simply sensational as the rough, "no holds barred" and argumentative mother who thinks she has all the answers and can solve all of her family's problems. Fran is a woman you will most likely hate, but from Baker's excellent portrayal, and Bovell's expert writing, you won't ever question her actions or her motives.... a thought-provoking, poignant, poetic, and powerful play that beautifully demonstrates that, no matter how much you prepare for the future and guide your children, you can never truly be prepared for what life has planned. Also, while the characters may not all be likable, as there are plenty of nasty confrontations and hurtful words they say, they are all individuals you can't look away from. That shows just how well written, acted and directed this production is." -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)

"... a smart, searing dissection of one family’s particular unhappiness by Australian playwright Andrew Bovell. The American-premiere production, currently running at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix, is world-class and unforgettable, matching the script’s literary depth with an elegant, evocative staging....The actors are stellar...builds inexorably to a devastating climax. Every tear is earned." Kerry Lengel, Arizona Republic (click here to read the complete review)

"...With a running time of two hours and ten minutes, including a fifteen-minute intermission, Bovell’s play doesn’t simply pull you in, it forcibly yanks, keeping a firm grip on your attention as conflict after conflict is confronted... It’s difficult to remember a play that resonates in such a way to the point where your mind has an inability to think of anything else hours after having left the theater..." -David Appleford, Valley Screen and Stage (click here to read the complete review)
