"...Unlike last season's Man of La Mancha, which brought a completely vibrant, fresh and inspired take to that show, ATC's The Music Man is a fairly straightforward and safe presentation of the crowd-pleasing musical....Director David Ivers...delivers a fast-paced production with a cast who all do well in creating realistic characters. Bill English exudes charm with appropriately seedy undertones as the fast-talking Hill, making the audience always suspicious of his intentions...With well-delivered cynicism displayed in her discerning facial expressions and biting quips, Manna Nichols is quite good as the doubting Marian. English and Nichols also create a believable romantic duo....Choreographer Jaclyn Miller has crafted some fun, inspired and effective dance steps for the production. Ivers and Miller work well together to ensure the ensemble is used effectively in the larger production numbers, with the dance movement always seamlessly in line with and growing organically out of the stage action...With a good cast and creative elements, and effective choreography and direction, Arizona Theatre Company's production of The Music Man is a fine, fun-filled presentation of this classic show." -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)
"... " There’s no attempt to re-imagine a proven classic with modern-day relevancy or uncover hidden nuggets that might relate to a new generation of musical theatre-goers raised on Rent, Fun Home, and an array of pop/rock jukebox musicals. Director David Ivers clearly knows there’s little to find under the bold, brassy arrangements of blaring trumpets and those seventy-six trombones, and there’s no point in looking. Instead, he keeps things chugging on the rock island line in the way it was always designed, and that’s as it should be."..." -David Appleford, Valley Screen and Stage (click here to read the complete review)
".magnificent "pull out all the stops" production... (David) Ivers has taken Willson's oft-performed play ...and transformed it into an eye-popping and hand-clapping two hours of nonstop jubilation. Extravaganza might be a better description ~ what with Scott Pask's extraordinary set designs that recreate the turn-of-the-century environs of River City, Iowa; Margaret Neville's colorful and exquisitely tailored period costumes (for 30! cast members); and the seamless coordination of sound (Abe Jacob) and light (Philip Rosenberg). Ivers has populated River City with a cast that is a tsunami of talent, featuring Bill English whose Hill is alive with authenticity and charisma and Manna Nichols whose Marian glows with sincerity and charm....." - Herbert Paine, Broadway World (click here to read the complete review)
