ROLES AVAILABLE

HAND TO GOD

Available roles: 3 M 2 F

JASON / TYRONE … to play 17 – any ethnicity; seemingly mild-mannered and polite, retiring, inarticulate, and shy, has an alter-ego who is extremely aggressive, foul-mouthed, shameless, and highly articulate, puppetry skills and character voices required.

MARGERY … 40s – any ethnicity; Jason’s mother, a jittery woman trying desperately to keep her family and life together after the death of her husband, has a warm, passionate nature, but all that is suppressed by her worries about her troubled son and by the day to day pressures of making a living for both of them, seems like a powder keg about to explode, and when it does, an aggressive sexuality comes flooding out.

PASTOR GREG … 30s-50s – any ethnicity; tries valiantly to fulfill his duties as the shepherd of his flock, seemingly supportive, underneath, however, it is clear that his altruism is fueled by needy loneliness and that he might resent that no one is ever there for him, despite it all, he has his meltdown point, and out of nowhere violence flares out.

TIMMY … to play 17 - any ethnicity; a troubled kid, caught in survival mode at having to negotiate his dysfunctional family, he protects his fragility by forgoing any impulse control, probably in “special classes” because of his behavior problems, a combination of blatant assertiveness and underlying need make him at once full of sex and violence.

JESSICA … to play 17 - any ethnicity; a complicated young woman, trapped in a small town with small ideas, smart, though somewhat introverted, does not suffer fools gladly, relates to outsiders like herself, supportive and kind to those who might need help, ruthlessly abrupt with those she perceives as selfish and arrogant.

GIDION’S KNOT

Available roles: 2 F

CORYNN FELL … 30s-50s – any ethnicity; a strong-minded literature professor at Northwestern University; her son has been expelled from his elementary school.

HEATHER CLARK … 30s-50s – any ethnicity; earnest, smart, emotionally overwhelmed fifth-grade teacher.

ABOUT THE SHOWS:

HAND TO GOD
by Robert Askins
February 2 - 25, 2018
at Phoenix Theatre’s Hormel Theatre
a co-production with Phoenix Theatre
Directed by Ron May

2015 Tony nominee for Best Play

The filthiest puppet you’ll ever meet. After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry, in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet small town of Cypress, Texas. Jason’s complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door, and - most especially - his mother are thrown into upheaval when Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. HAND TO GOD explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith and morality. “HAND TO GOD is so ridiculously raunchy, irreverent and funny it’s bound to leave you sore from laughing. Ah, hurts so good.” - New York Daily News

GIDION'S KNOT
by Johnna Adams
March 9 - 24, 2018
at Tempe Center for the Arts
in a co-production with Tempe Center for the Arts
Directed by Tracy Liz Miller

There are never any easy answers.

Over the course of a harrowing, unexpected parent/teacher conference, a grieving mother and an emotionally overwhelmed primary school teacher have a fraught conversation about the the mother's son, Gidion. Gidion may have been bullied severely - or - he may have been an abuser. “Gidion's Knotunderstands one thing about school violence that many plays on this topic miss, and that's the way people's positions always change when anything involves their own kid.” – Chicago Tribune
