"Deceived, an updated take on Patrick Hamilton's classic 1938 thriller Gaslight, manages to stay faithful to the chilling psychological core of the original while offering a fresh and modern edge that makes the story feel relevant. The play uses the same elements of emotional manipulation and creeping dread that were prominent in Hamilton's original piece, but the dialogue and pacing are sharper, the power dynamics more nuanced, and the female perspective more pronounced. Arizona Theatre Company's production is a stunner, with a fantastic cast, including a riveting portrayal by Laakan McHardy as the woman at the center of the story, direction that keeps the tension taut, and very impressive creative elements." - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)
"Walk into Arizona Theatre Company’s new staging of Gaslight, now titled DECEIVED for the 21st century, and you slip down the rabbit hole of Victorian repression that’s laced with dread. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that this new retelling is to be some polite dusting-off of Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 classic; it’s a full-throated reimagining, courtesy of Johnna Wright and Patty Jamieson. It understands both the terrifying timeliness of psychological manipulation and the sadistic charm of suspense when it’s done right." - David Appleford, Broadway World (click here to read the complete review)
"Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 thriller “Gaslight” has a smashing and delightfully spooky new adaptation by Johnna Wright and Patty Jamieson that leaves the play historically based but updates it cleverly for contemporary audiences. The play adds some laughter at the crafty but predictable plot. Most significantly, the reworking points to female pride and not getting tumbled by an arrogant husband who tries to turn his wife wacky." -Chris Curcio, Curtain Up Phoenix (click here to read the complete review)
