Southwest Shakespeare Company is pleased to bring live theater safely to Phoenix with Debra Ann Byrd’s acclaimed solo performance, offering limited in person admission and virtual attendance options.
Southwest Shakespeare Company kicks off it’s fall season of solo live and virtual performances with Debra Ann Byrd’s multifaceted Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey.
Smart, thoughtful and transformative, Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey is a living memoir of Byrd’s trials and triumphs with race and the classics, her memorable experiences growing up in Spanish Harlem and her gender flipped journey on the road to becoming Shakespeare's noble, flawed general. This solo show is complete with moving songs and lyrical language from Black women playwrights, William Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, Martin Luther King, Jr., Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and the King James Bible. A victory over helplessness and hopelessness, it’s sure to leave you feeling uplifted and inspired.
Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey is written and performed by Debra Ann Byrd, the founding Artistic Director of Harlem Shakespeare Festival, winner of Broadway World Phoenix’s Best Actress award, former writer-in-residence at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and Fellow at Folger institute in Washington, D.C. and Columbia University.
Limited in-person tickets are available for Taliesin West. Please see swshakespeare.org for our safety practices and policies. Virtual tickets are also available, with no limits on the number of viewers per virtual ticket purchased.
