Spotlight Youth Theatre Unveils "Act One" of 2020-2021 Season

from our friends at Spotlight Youth Theatre:

As local theatre learns how to keep creating during the pandemic, Spotlight Youth Theatre is trying new programming formats to keep performers and patrons safe. Artistic Director Kenny Grossman set the schedule only for “Act One” of Spotlight's 2020-2021 season through January, to keep options open for the spring schedule.

"Our theme for the new season is 'Create,'" Grossman says. "Artists create. Through theatre we hope to create joy, fun, peace, understanding, silliness, suspense, vision, and friendship with original works and even an old classic, performed safe and onstage."

This season features more dramas and comedies than usual, with just one traditional musical slated so far: a revival of Grossman's own rock & roll spin on a timeless fairy tale. Premieres of three more original plays are among the other shows this year.

All of the shows are planned for very small casts, and short runs played to physically-distanced audiences. At the same time, these shows will be available to much larger audiences than usual with a new focus on live-streaming the shows as online events.

"Act One" of Spotlight Youth Theatre's 2020-2021 Season includes the following:

Oct. 30-Nov. 1:
The Soul of Frankenstein
By Bobby Sample

Just in time for Halloween, Spotlight premieres this spooky drama that closely follows the seminal horror novel by Mary Shelley. Victoria Frankenstein is obsessed with creating life, but finds her own success too horrifying to accept. This play auditions Sep. 28-29, with video auditions accepted. See details at http://sytaz.org/tsof

Nov. 20-22:
Emmett's Art Project
By Brianna Fallon and Abbey Yee

When the Black Lives Matter movement dominates the news, there is tension and division among Amirah's mixed group of friends. They are inspired to protest in their own ways when their friend Emmett is shot by the police for defacing public property. This drama is another premiere, written especially to confront issues young people face in today's world.

Art by Robert Waller

Dec. 4-6:
Desperate Housewives of Shakespeare
By Jim and Jane Jeffries

Shakespeare has been manipulating and twisting their lives for six plays now. So now that Shakespeare has been found dead, Lady Macbeth, Juliet, Kate, Rosalind, Cleopatra, and Titania are all the prime suspects. This one-act comedy is planned to be rehearsed as a program geared for home-schoolers.

Dec. 18-20:
A Charlie Brown Christmas
By Charles M. Schulz and Eric Shaeffer

The classic animated television special A Charlie Brown Christmas comes to life in this faithful stage adaptation in which Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang discover the true meaning of Christmas.

Art by Robert Waller

Jan. 2-3:
Cinderella: A Rock & Roll Fairytale
Book, Lyrics and Music by Kenny Grossman

Cinderella needs the magical assistance of a rock & roll icon to get to the Prince's ball. Grossman has adapted a new "Junior" version of his satirical musical version of the classic fairy tale, especially to be rehearsed during a holiday theatre camp.

Jan. 29-31:
Whatever, Just Wash Your Hands (A Potty Party)
By Kenny Grossman

In this comedy premiere, the “gender inclusive restroom” at a theatre includes six stalls, a stressed out stage manager, a wacky director, a load of actors wanting to unload, and a bunch of unstable techies who bring new meaning to the term “bathroom humor."

DADDY LONG LEGS - Hale Centre Theatre - October 19, 2020 - November 17, 2020

Music and Lyrics by Paul Gordon
Book by John Caird

Directed by Tim Dietlein
Run Time: 2 hours and 15 minutes

Based on the classic novel, which inspired the 1955 movie starring Fred Astaire, Daddy Long Legs is a beloved tale in the spirit of Jane Austen, The Brontë Sisters and “Downton Abbey.” Daddy Long Legs features music and lyrics by Tony Award-nominated composer/lyricist, Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre), and Tony-winning librettist/director, John Caird (Les Misérables), and is a “rags-to-riches” tale of newfound love.

Jerusha Abbott is the “Oldest Orphan in the John Grier Home” until a mysterious benefactor decides to send her to college to be educated as a writer. Required to write him a letter once a month, she is never to know the benefactor’s identity – so she invents one for him: Daddy Long Legs. Although she knows that he will never respond to her letters, she grows more and more fond of this elusive and kindly “old” gentleman. But another relationship soon begins to develop in Jerusha’s life. Jervis Pendleton is the well-do-do, “youngish” uncle of one of Jerusha’s roommates, who introduces her to a world of literature, travel and adventure. Through her correspondence with Daddy Long Legs and her growing intimacy with Jervis, Jerusha’s letters chronicle her emergence as a delightfully independent “New American Woman.” Yet, there is one startling fact that Jerusha has yet to uncover – a fact that will change her life forever.

The Phoenix Theatre Company Is Building Outdoor Stage to Bring Back Live Productions During Pandemic and Keep Patrons Safe

from our friends at the Phoenix Theatre Company:

COVID-19 has impacted nearly all industries, and the Valley’s arts community is among the hardest hit. Faced with the question—'to perform or to not perform?’, The Phoenix Theatre Company answers the unprecedented situation with a new vision of live theatre. Shows are set to premiere on an outdoor stage in November.

The new outdoor venue is under construction at the Central United Methodist Church, located at 1875 N. Central Ave., in Phoenix. Just one block north of the theatre’s three-stage complex, the customized stage will provide an outdoor venue with plenty of room for patrons to enjoy the live performance experience safely socially distanced.

“With the outdoor theatre, every aspect of the patron experience had to be reconsidered and redesigned,” said Karla Frederick, director of production. “It started as a dream and now I’m happy to say it’s really happening.”

The new performance space will accommodate approximately 250 attendees, seated in pairs and distanced six feet in all directions. The 32 foot by 24 foot stage has been custom designed and engineered by outdoor event specialists to allow our production team to recreate our high production values without sacrificing safety. A wall of screens will be installed at the back of the stage to increase the flexibility of the space.

Along with the logistical challenges of constructing an outdoor stage, all the work had to comply with local, state and national health mandates. The organization obtained approval from the state and the city to hold outdoor gatherings and continues to work with the city to meet permitting standards.

“This work is six months in the making,” said Vincent VanVleet, managing director, “we had to make absolutely sure that we could present outdoor shows without increasing the risk to public health. It was a tricky needle to thread, but I couldn’t be more proud of all we’ve accomplished. Best of all, we’ll be helping put some of the country’s finest arts professionals back to work.”

In March, The Phoenix Theatre Company voluntarily suspended performances to help arrest the spread of COVID-19. This break in programming is the first time in its 100-year history.

“More than ever, we need a reason for hope and a path forward,” said Michael Barnard, producing artistic director. “It is our greatest wish to gather and share the experience of live theatre – whatever that looks like. We take our responsibility of keeping our patrons and artists safe seriously . This new outdoor venue will allow us to do just that. We are so grateful that our guests continue to stick with us—they truly lift us up.”

Performances at the outdoor venue are slated to begin Tuesday, Nov. 10, with Happy Birthday Dionne, a tribute to Dionne Warwick featuring the celebrated local trio We3. Outdoor programming will run through May 2021. The theatre is tentatively scheduling the return of live shows for June 2021 and will start with The Rocky Horror Show and Something Rotten!.

The Phoenix Theatre Company will announce its full lineup of outdoor and virtual programming in early October. Season ticket holders and donors will be notified via email about ticket options. Tickets will be available to the general public starting Oct. 19, 2020. To learn more about upcoming programming and health and safety guidelines visit www.phoenixtheatre.com/alerts.
