A conversation with Jacqueline Williams who plays Calpurnia, often called the "heart of the Finch family", in the National Tour of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

from our friends at ASU Gammage:

A staple of high school reading lists and an iconic eye-opener into injustice in America, Harper Lee’s "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a classic that remains relevant years after the book’s publication and the film that came shortly after. Now, the story has been adapted for the stage, and the national Broadway tour is at ASU Gammage this week.

Set in 1934, To Kill a Mockingbird explores racial injustice, morality and the undertones of the deep south in Maycomb, Alabama, through a lens of childhood wonder in the eyes of tomboy Scout Finch, whose father, the small-town lawyer Atticus Finch, defends a black man accused of rape.

62 years after the novel’s release and just before the 60th anniversary for the film, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, adapted for the stage by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Bartlett Sher, sends a message that is just as impactful today as in the past.

Jacqueline Williams, who plays Calpurnia, the housekeeper and often called the ‘heart’ of the Finch family, said she feels “blessed to be revived” in the role, and that it has “been a joy, and honor and a duty to travel and share the story.”

In Sorkin’s Broadway adaptation of the novel and film, her character, who plays a pivotal role in the life of the family at the center of the plot, has been expanded, and she has been given new lines never seen or heard in the book or film.

“She's funny, wise, quick, sharp and honest,” said Williams.

To theater goers who are familiar with the story, Williams shares, “For those who know the book and film, its neither; it’s both and more at the same time. Sorkin’s live theater event is an honoring of Harper Lee’s story and message, and at the same time, elevates it to our time without taking it out of 1934 where the story takes place. It’s a story that a lot of people have a relationship with, including myself.”

The well-known story is one that many can recall from memory, yet live on stage, Sorkin brings a new, animated edge to the tale.

“It's a story that sits in people's hearts and a story still relevant today,” said Williams.

She hopes the stage production will encourage the audience to think about the show's themes in modern contexts, and reflect on their own experiences.

Through her character, Williams said it’s important to bring to life the impact of these issues on stage in front of an audience. “Part of it is a duty, out here trying to fight the good fight, elevate each other, uplift each other and be better together.”

For Williams, each time the curtain rises is a chance to share the message of human goodness versus evil, and bring light to the importance of justice served, and morality weighted through her character.

“My favorite thing about the tour has been that every now and then, I can hear by reactions, surprised reactions, regarding the trial, that someone is out there experiencing the trial for the first time,” said Williams.

Williams shares the spotlight with a star-studded cast, including Emmy Award winner Richard Thomas as Atticus Finch, Melanie Moore as Scout Finch, Justin Mark as Jem Finch, Yaegel T. Welch as Tom Robinson, and Mary Badham, Oscar nominee for playing Scout in the 1962 To Kill a Mockingbird film, who returns to the production as Mrs. Henry Dubose.

“A fantastic group of humans, every performance eight times a week is amazing as we live and breathe together and also shine together,” claimed Williams.

To Kill a Mockingbird at ASU Gammage will continue through Sunday, Dec.11.

Tickets are available at the box office, or online at asugammage.com

Review Highlights: LA RUTA - Stray Cat Theatre

"...the numerous murders of women and girls who worked in the factories in the...Mexican border town of Ciudad Juárez. Thousands of women had been abducted with many sexually assaulted or murdered, their bodies dumped in the desert, and (Isaac) Gomez' play La Ruta, brings light to this subject. ...a fantastic cast who beautifully depict with memorable performances the emotional impact of these horrific deaths. It's just a shame that Gomez' play isn't as fleshed out and fully developed as it could be and leaves many questions unanswered. The subject of La Ruta is clearly one that more people need to be aware of–not just the murders and sexual assault of these young women, but also the harsh working environment in which many were underpaid and overworked. ..there are so many loose ends and unanswered questions that it seems like a half-baked drama. The jumps in time also sometimes slow down the forward momentum of the play....Fortunately, the cast for this production, under Chris Chávez' astute direction, is superb. Dolores E. Mendoza is exceptional as the quiet yet powerful Yolanda. Estrella Paloma Parra is superb as Marisela...a fairly powerful drama that depicts the pervasive terror faced by the female maquila workers in Juárez and the impact their disappearances have on their family members. While the play isn't entirely successful, the cast in Stray Cat's production excel." - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)

"...As staged by Chris R. Chavez, the play runs an intense 90 minutes without intermission and Chavez keeps the action taunt, tight, and intense but slow and deliberate as the play demands. The bleak set captures the deplorable conditions but it is the magnificent acting that makes this production so telling.  Although the roles vary in complexity, each of the ensemble – Dolores E. Mendoza as Yolanda, Estrella Paloma Parra’s Marisela, Amanda Lopez-Castillo as Ivonne, the Brenda of Maria Cruz, Alexandra “Sandy” Leon as Zaide, and Tiffany Valenzuela’s Desamaya – are stellar and make you care about each character."   -Chris Curcio, Curtain Up Phoenix (click here to read the complete review)

"...if you're unaware of the femicide stories and this is all new to you, learning of them directly through what is expressed by the characters in the play may feel murky, resulting in an unclear perspective and a reduced, emotional impact. However, if by having only a brief awareness of these frightful events before you take your seat, everything that will soon unfold - the full, deep, emotional wallop of what you'll hear - will hit you with a power enough to make you catch your breath..."   -  David Appleford, Broadway World (click here to read the complete review)

Review Highlights: RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA - The Phoenix Theatre Company

Alex Branton and Joy Del Valle

highlights from local critics reviews - (click link at bottom of each review to read complete review)

Click here for more information on this production that runs through January 1

"...a well-cast production that is rich, romantic, and simply glorious....As Ella, Joy Del Valle is bright and full of joy. She has a natural ease and an abundance of warmth that make Ella a woman you care for and want to see find her prince. Her singing voice shines with a clear delivery and understanding of the lyrics. Alex Branton does a lovely job as Topher, a man who doesn't realize until he meets Ella that he isn't as in touch with the world around him as he should be. Branton gets to deliver some of Rodgers and Hammerstein's loveliest songs, including "Ten Minutes Ago," and his voice soars on them....With a modern sensibility and a fun, updated take on the classic fairy-tale characters, Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella at The Phoenix Theatre Company is a joyful and magical holiday treat." - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)

"...There’s an extraordinary singing and dancing cast as scenery swirls and twirls around creating the title character’s modest home to the Palace’s opulence along with the horse drawn, pumpkin-inspired carriage. ...An exemplary cast of local favorites dazzles as the superficial characters never stop moving in Michael Barnard’s airy staging that optimistically flashes the tale’s boundless joyfulness...the ideal family holiday show"   -Chris Curcio, Curtain Up Phoenix (click here to read the complete review)

"...With its sparkling, kaleidoscopic array of ever-changing colors that dominate this vibrant, lavishly designed production, CINDERELLA is perhaps the epitome of a magical, musical theatre production, the kind that has earned The Phoenix Theatre Company its reputation as a leading player for musical theatre in the Valley. It is quite spectacular."    David Appleford, Broadway World (click here to read the complete review)

When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past – and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. Propelled by an ensemble of onstage musicians and dancers, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion, beautiful melodies and powerfully moving performances.
