Paradise Valley Community College's 2025/2026 Season!

Little Women
by Thomas Hischak
Directed by Gary Zaro
October 17-26, 2025

Little Women is based on a coming-of-age novel written by American novelist Louisa May Alcott. It has become a classic and has numerous movie and play adaptations based on it.  The story follows the lives of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—and details their passage from childhood to womanhood. Loosely based on the lives of the author and her three sisters,  it is classified as an autobiographical or semi-autobiographical story.

Advanced Directing Student Shows

Each year in our Studio Theatre we have opportunities for our students to direct One Act plays or Full length plays if they are directing a second time.  There is always a wonderful variety and even some original works written by the directors.  Titles will be announced by October.

DELORIS VAN CARTIER — Female. Black. Ages 20ish - 40ish An aspiring performer, trying to find both fame and a place in the world. When forced to hide in the convent, she initially refuses to embrace her new lifestyle but learns to embrace it when she works with the choir. Loud-mouthed, and sassy, but ultimately caring. Vocal range: E3-F#5
MOTHER SUPERIOR — Female. Age 40ish - 70ish. The head of the convent, sarcastic and a bit stiff. Extremely protective about keeping her sisters away from the outside world, which puts her in direct opposition to Deloris and her musical teachings. Vocal Range: D3 - E5
SISTER MARY ROBERT — Female. Ages 16ish - 30ish. A postulant, abandoned as a baby and raised at the convent. Shy and soft-spoken, but singing with Deloris lets her find her voice. Her wallflower lifestyle has made her live a shell of a life. Vocal Range: F#3 - A5
SISTER MARY PATRICK — Female. Ages 20ish - 40ish. A nun of the convent. Consistently perky, enthusiastic, and easily excitable.
SISTER MARY LAZARUS — Female. Any race but black. Ages 20ish - 60ish. A nun of the convent and the head of the choir. Rather deadpan and the least welcoming of any of the nuns, but she gets caught up in Deloris's soul music. Vocal Range: F3-B4
MONSIGNOR O'HARA — Male. Ages 25ish - 70ish. One of the heads of the convent. Constantly concerned with financial matters, though soul music surprisingly puts him in a different mood. Vocal Range: E3-G4
CURTIS — Male. Ages 20ish - 40ish. A club owner, notorious gangster, and Deloris's boyfriend. Cocky and controlling, always on the verge of violence. Vocal Range: A2-Ab4
EDDIE — Male. Person of color. Age 20ish - 40ish. The desk chief at the Philadelphia police station and a high school classmate of Deloris who helps get her into hiding. Faces a lot of nerves when under pressure, causing him to sweat profusely. He still yearns for Deloris after all these years, and dreams of being her hero. Vocal Range: Ab2 -B4
TJ — Male. Ages 16ish - 30ish. Curtis's nephew and one of his thugs. Deft and cognizant of the fact, constantly in a state of ignorant bliss. Vocal Range Db3 - Eb5
JOEY — Male. Ages 20ish - 40ish. One of Curtis's thugs. Believes himself to be quite the ladies' man. Vocal Range: Bb2 - Eb5
PABLO — Male. Must speak Spanish. Ages 20ish - 40ish. One of Curtis's thugs. A natural follower, constantly speaks in Spanish. Vocal Range: C4-F5
SISTER MARY MARTIN-OF-TOURS — Female. Ages 20ish - 60ish. A nun of the convent. Clearly in her own world, but has her moments of surprising clarity.
SISTER MARY THERESA — Female. Ages 40ish - 70ish. A nun of the convent, the oldest of the group. Decrepit at a glance, but secretly packs a punch.
MICHELLE — Female. 20sih - 40ish. One of Deloris's back-up singers. Lippy and always quick with a retort. Vocal Range: Bb3-F5
TINA — Female. 20ish - 40ish. One of Deloris's back-up singers. A little thick and naive. Vocal Range: Ab3-F5
ERNIE — Male. White. 20ish - 50ish. One of Curtis's thugs. Initially thought to be a mindless yes-man, he turns out to be an undercover police informant.

"Tom Ziegler's heartfelt and intimate play Grace and Glorie celebrates the power of human connection while also balancing humor with reflection. While it's also overly long and somewhat predictable, it still makes for an entertaining story about two very different women whose lives intersect at a pivotal moment. Black Theatre Troupe's production captures that sense of discovery and connection with warmth and authenticity due to assured performances from Shari Watts and Ryan Jenkins....Ziegler's play explores themes of mortality, forgiveness, resilience, and the beauty of simple human kindness. It reflects on the value and importance of connection even in the face of loss."   - Gil Benbrook, TalkinBroadway.com (click here to read the complete review)
