SYNOPSIS-

Anthony and Rosemary are two introverted misfits straddling 40. Anthony has spent his entire life on a cattle farm in rural Ireland, a state of affairs that—due to his painful shyness—suits him well. Rosemary lives right next door, determined to have him, watching the years slip away. With Anthony’s father threatening to disinherit him and a land feud simmering between their families, Rosemary has every reason to fear romantic catastrophe. But then, in this very Irish story with a surprising depth of poetic passion, these yearning, eccentric souls fight their way towards solid ground and some kind of happiness. Their journey is heartbreaking, funny as hell, and ultimately deeply moving.

CASTING 2 Females & 2 Males

Character Descriptions

Rosemary- (LEAD, Mid 30's)

Rosemary is the daughter of Aoife, and when the play opens, she has just lost her father. She and her mother live on the farm next to the Reilly’s, and the two families have, for the most part, always been on good terms with each other. Rosemary has been in love with Anthony since the age of six. He however, as a young man, had his heart broken by a woman named Fiona, and hasn’t dared to open it again since. Rosemary has waited patiently year, after year, after year for him to come calling on her. She believes that he will come to her, as she has had a strong sign given to her that she will (she found a wedding ring near her house). Rosemary is intelligent, beautiful, and has had her share of marriage proposals over the years, though she has turned down each one. When Tony, Anthony’s father, threatens to give the farm to a nephew rather than to his son, Rosemary gets into a fairly heated argument with Tony. She defends Anthony as a man, as a farmer, and as a son, and she eventually convinces Tony that Anthony does indeed deserve the farm. In the end, after both of their parents have passed away, and years have passed, she bluntly asks Anthony why he has never courted her. He responds by eventually revealing the secret that drove Fiona away. Anthony’s secret doesn’t change how she feels about him, and she makes that very clear to him. That, on top of the fact that the ring she found is the one that he lost on his way to propose to her years ago, finally brings the two of them together.

Anthony Reilly-(LEAD, Early 40's)

The script states that “his eyes are those of an intense dreamer.” Anthony is the devoted son of Tony Reilly. He has spent his life on his father’s farm, despite the fact that it isn’t something he is truly passionate about. He doesn’t hate it, however, and he is able to find joy in it, despite his inhibitions. He is a good man, who works hard, has modernized the farm, and is successfully taking care of himself and his father.

Anthony had his heart broken as a young man by a woman named Fiona. He has never quite been able to get over her, partially because he revealed something very personal to her, and she then left him. He hasn’t pursued any other woman since. It is because of this that his father, Tony, threatens to leave the farm to a nephew in America rather than to Anthony. The farm has been in the family for one hundred and twenty years, and Tony is convinced that Anthony will never produce any heirs. Anthony, though hurt by this, determines that if it happens, he will make the best of it, and start a life elsewhere. Unbeknownst to him, his next door neighbor, Rosemary Muldoon, gets into an argument with his father about it and defends Anthony, thereby convincing Tony to leave the farm to his son.

Tony and Anthony have a typical father/son relationship. They love each other deeply, but disagree on, and fight about, many things.

On his deathbed, Tony reaffirms his faith in Anthony by confessing that it took him years to truly fall in love with his wife. When Tony found that love, he sold a bit of his well-loved land, and bought his wife a proper ring, rather than the brass one she had worn for years. And then, as he said, “And oh what days we had thereafter.” Tony passes away after saying these final words to his son, “I have faith that love will find you. Out in those fields where you wander. God bless you.”

Anthony does indeed find love, many years later. His neighbor, Rosemary reveals that she has been in love with him since the age of six, and asks why he has never courted her. Anthony finally finds the courage to tell his secret to another woman, and when he does so, he discovers that for Rosemary, it doesn’t matter at all. That, on top of the fact that she found the ring he lost when trying to propose to her three years ago, finally brings the two of them together.

Tony Reilly-(Supporting, 70's)

A “wily old Irishman.” Tony is a widower, a father, and a farmer. He is a loveable, but stubborn old man. Tony’s farm has been in his family for one hundred and twenty years, and he is determined that it will stay that way. This determination is so strong that Tony decides to leave the farm to a nephew in America, rather than to his own son, Anthony. Tony believes that Anthony, at age 42, will never marry, and therefore never produce any heirs. Eventually, however, Tony is convinced by his neighbors, Aoife and her daughter Rosemary, that he should leave the farm to Anthony.

On his deathbed reaffirms his faith in Anthony by confessing that it took him years to truly fall in love with his wife. Tony and Anthony have a typical father/son relationship. They love each other deeply, but disagree on, and fight about, many things.

Tony is a talkative, stubborn, determined, and independent man. He has strong opinions, but he also listens to what other say, and has the ability to open his mind and listen when others speak, even if he doesn’t agree with them.

Aoife Muldoon-(Supporting, 70's)

Her name is pronounced EE-fa. The script states, “She’s 70, in bad health, short of breath, walking with a cane, [and] a bit ravaged with grief.” She is the widow of Chris Muldoon, who has just passed away at the top of the play. It comes to light that she and her husband also lost an infant son many years ago. Aoife lives with her daughter, Rosemary, on the farm next to the Reillys. She and Tony Reilly are friends, as well as neighbors, and it seems that they often speak to one another. She is very opinionated and she loved her late husband very, very much. When Tony decides to give the farm to a nephew in America, rather than to his son Anthony, Aoife staunchly helps her daughter Rosemary convince Tony to change his mind.

Aoife has pretty much given up hope that her daughter will ever marry. When Rosemary reveals that she is determined to wait for Tony’s son Anthony to come courting her, Aofie doesn’t quite know what to make of that, but supports her daughter nonetheless.

Aofie is a strong woman who has had a long life and survived much grief over the years.
