"The writing trio of Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten have crafted more 20 comedies that feature small-town characters with big personalities. One of their most popular plays is The Dixie Swim Club, which is receiving a beautiful production at Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre. With confident direction, this production gets big laughs from the humorous dialogue and has a great cast that might also get you to shed a few tears from the heartfelt, emotional situations in a fairly realistic story that beautifully portrays how friendships endure....There isn't a weak link in the cast, with each, under KatiBelle Collins' clear direction, beautifully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of these identifiable women in portrayals that never falter and are entirely credible. You also instantly believe the five actresses have been friends for over 20 years...When you have a superb cast and confident direction, as in Desert Stages' wonderful production, it doesn't matter if The Dixie Swim Club may not be that original and the characters and situations may seem familiar. Seeing these five excellent actresses depict the lifelong friendships of these five close women will have you laughing and crying as they swim through the ups and downs of life." -Gil Benbrook, Talkin' Broadway (click here to read the complete review)

"...With a brightly lit and hugely effective beach cottage set designed by the play’s director and Rick Sandler, the smaller setting of the company’s Actor’s Café is put to excellent use, creating the illusion of more space than is often depicted. The challenge for Desert Stages is always to choose a play that works in the given forum. The Dixie Swim Club was never Broadway-bound, but as regional theatre with sit-com sensibilities, presented in this enjoyably lively Actor’s Café production with this cast, each of whom seems just right for the character type they portray, director Collins has delivered a perfect fit." -David Appleford, Valley Screen and Stage (click here to read the complete review)

Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. COLUMBINUS - Greasepaint Youth Theatre - September 6-8, 2019

DIRECTOR: PETE BISH
AGES 16-18 WITH PARENT PERMISSION
**DUE TO SUBJECT MATTER, THIS SHOW IS NOT FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
Columbinus, a play sparked by the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., is a meeting of fact and fiction that illuminates the realities of adolescent culture by exploring the events surrounding the shootings. The play weaves together excerpts from discussions with parents, survivors and community leaders in Littleton as well as police evidence to bring to light the dark recesses of American adolescence. When Columbinus premiered in 2005 at the Round House Theatre, Peter Marks of the Washington Post called it, “An ambitious examination of the suburbanization of evil,” and the play went on to receive five Helen Hayes Award nominations including the Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play. Following the off-Broadway opening at New York Theatre Workshop one year later, Variety proclaimed: “This one comes straight from the gut—a wrenching return to the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in which 12 students and a teacher were killed when two senior classmates went on a shooting rampage. The United States Theatre Project’s smart and sensitive treatment of the event, which traumatized a suburban Colorado community and shocked the entire country, stirs up thought and feeling in this clean ensemble production, drawn from interviews, public records and the private diaries of the shooters.”

FRIDAY THE 13TH THE PARODY MUSICAL - All Puppet Players - October 4-26, 2019

The All Puppet Players bring you back to 80's horror with this puppet-infused comedic take on one of the genre’s biggest icons. Superstitious locals warn against keeping a fading summer camp open, but past murders don't sway the teenage riff-raff and the young dumb co-ed counselors from setting up shop in the woodsy area. See the counselors as they're slashed, shot and stabbed, all while dancing, singing and hitting their cues! The counselors struggle to stay alive against a merciless opponent who wields a machete and a melody in his heart. This puppet parody musical could not be more insane, deranged, bloody, or hilarious!

MAN OF LA MANCHA - Fountain Hills Theater - November 8-24, 2019

Written by Dale Wasserman, Music by Mitch Leigh,  Lyrics by Joe Darion
Original Production Staged by Albert Marre
Originally Produced by Albert W. Selden and Hal James

Mainstage Too Show

Man of La Mancha, based on Cervantes’ epic 17th-century novel, Don Quixote, is a remarkable, poignant, moving musical that was one of the first shows to musicalize a piece of historical literature. Set in the context of the Spanish Inquisition, Man of La Mancha is presented as a play-within-a-play. Through the story, all the prisoners – at least for a moment – are transformed. The mad Don Quixote may think a windmill to be a giant and a tavern to be a castle, but along the way he also transforms a wretched woman into a beautiful lady – and proves that an old man’s belief can truly make him a knight. Man of La Mancha features such stirring songs as “Dulcinea” and the now-famous standard, “Quest” – more famously known as “The Impossible Dream.”

Man Of La Mancha is presented by arrangement with TAMS-WITMARK www.tamswitmark.com

This devastatingly funny comedy follows a day in the life of Sam Peliczowski, an out-of-work actor who mans the red-hot reservation line at Manhattan's number-one restaurant. Coercion, threats, bribes, histrionics—a cast of desperate callers will stop at nothing in their zeal to land a prime reservation, or the right table. Amid the barrage, Sam's got his own needs to contend with—his recently widowed dad wants him home for Christmas, and he's up for a choice part at Lincoln Center. While juggling scheming socialites, name-dropping wannabes, fickle celebrities and egomaniacal bosses, can he manage to look out for himself? Fully Committed has forty wildly diverse characters designed to be played by a single versatile performer.

Fully Committed is presented through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service.

Character Breakdown
Anne Frank- (Early Teens, Lead) Anne Frank begins the play as an energetic, imaginative, and lighthearted girl of thirteen.  She spends her days reading and devotedly writing in her diary. She is friendly, curious, and bold, often interjecting her thoughts into other people’s conversations and arguments.

Otto Frank– (Early 50’s, Lead) Frank is a patient and understanding man. He is frequently the voice of reason in the Annex, diffusing arguments and displaying the most sane judgement. He is generous, as evidenced by his willingness to hide the Van Daans and Mr. Dussel with his own family.

Edith Frank– (Early 40’s, Supporting) Edith Frank is the wife of Otto Frank and mother to Anne and Margot. Mrs. Frank loves her children above all else. However, her devotion to her children is not always overt or overly sentimental, which Anne often misinterprets and turns against.

Margot Frank– (Late Teens), Supporting) Margot Frank is the first daughter of Otto and Edith Frank and older sister to Anne. Margot is in her late teens. She is the opposite of her sister in most ways: she is soft-spoken and keeps to herself.

Peter Van Daan– (Early to Late Teens, Supporting) Peter Van Daan is the teenage son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, and one of the occupants of the secret Annex. Peter is a rather shy, awkward boy who prefers to keep to himself, with only his cat — Mouschi — for company.

Mrs. Van Daan– (Early 40’s, Supporting) Mrs. Van Daan is an occupant of the secret Annex, along with her husband and son, Peter. The Van Daans are a wealthy family who are accustomed to living a life of far more extravagant means than their life in hiding can afford.

Mr. Van Daan– (Early-Mid 40’s, Supporting) Mr. Van Daan is an occupant of the secret Annex, where he lives in hiding along with his wife and son. Mr. Van Daan has a rather large personality for the small space. When in a good mood, he is boisterous, funny, and jovial. He is a man who likes to laugh, drink, and smoke.

Jan Dussel -(50’s, Supporting) Mr. Dussel is the last addition to the group hidden at the Annex. Mr. Dussel is a tightly-wound, but ultimately kind man.

Mr. Kraler– (40’s+, Supporting) Mr. Kraler is a former employee of Mr. Frank’s. When it becomes clear that the Jewish Frank family must go into hiding, Mr. Kraler offers his aid in order to keep them alive. He is an incredibly loyal and giving, putting his own life at risk to keep his friend safe. He is also a smart and astute man.

Miep Gies– ( Early- Mid 30’s Supporting) Miep Gies is a Dutch Christian woman who is a former employee of Mr. Frank. An extremely loyal friend, she agrees to aid the Franks when they go into hiding from the Nazis after they invade Holland. In doing so, she risks her own life in order to subvert the Nazi regime and protect her Jewish friends. Miep is friendly and giving, making the Annex’s inhabitants cakes and bringing special presents when she can.

What To Prepare
